Roses in and around Winston-Salem

(Zone 7a)

Hi,
Have been seeing lots and lots of beautiful rose shrubs used in landscaping, mostly a pinkish red but other colors too. Any ideas on what they are and where to buy some for fall planting? I've been told that they are Knock Outs but was wondering if there other varieties as well.
Thanks

It is probably Knockout Roses. They are the new craze here too. I saw a yellow one at Lowes or HD. We had gone to both stores the other day and I am not sure which one it was. I have a red Knockout that my sister gave me for my birthday.

dlhma,
The knock out roses are great. Very little care and lots of blooms. The red is the best to buy. There is a "Blush" and a pink that do not bloom as profusely as the red. I have all but the yellow and the red is the best bloomer...They are all hyberdized from the red so as a nurseryman told me, your blooms will be less on the other colors. Also, the bushes do not grow as vigouously as the red. So far I have found this to be true. If I had it to do over, I would only buy the red. But you know us gardeners----we have to have one of each color. Could be with time they will improve. I have had mine for two years and am not pleased with the other colors.
Just something to think about. Would love to hear from other gardeners.

BSD - I have to agree I love my red knockout for it's profuse blooms and ease of care! This spring it was loaded down with blooms and when I worked at the nursery you are right - the red had the most blooms!....I have several queen elizabeth that smell so good but the black spot is wearing me out...angel face is another one I love for it's scent but....the upkeep with the rest of the yard too..yep - knockout roses are a lot less fussier to tend to

BSD, any difference in the blooming between the red or yellow singles vs doubles?

Conway, SC

pyro: I could be wrong but I think that the red single or double is the best. I find that the others colors do not bloom as well. It could be that as they mature that this will improve. My blush and pink are two years old and have grown very little. The red is the same age but doulbed in size. The yellow I would not purchase this year but wait and see if they improve it in the future. It is a very poor bloomer. Again, this is just my observation. Hopefully, we may get some other opinions

I am about to toss a half dozen of the pink KO's because they just do not bloom enough to earn their keep. The plants themselves are pretty scraggly too. Just not worth it to waste fertilizer and water on.

I LOVE my red one however.

as much as I know the knock out roses are so easy to grow and bloom, they are used sooo very much now, I'm bored with them. hope they come out with more colors!

just remember dlhmda - all roses are heavy drinkers and feeders, but they must have good draining soil. they don't like to sit in water - here in Carolinas, if you have clay soil and don't raise the soil level up (don't have to have a frame, it can just be higher soil level and heavy mulch) about 12", then they get really straggly really fast. their roots like a good solid wetting, and then want to be dry.

with the knockout roses, and their heavy continuous bloom, they take a LOT of extra feedings and extra water.

check out Witherspoons Rose Gardens inbetween Chapel Hill and Durham. they are THE premier rose growers in NC. great growing help on their website.
