My First German Import Seeds

DeRidder, LA(Zone 9a)

At the end of Dec. last year I had one bloom on Lovely Lady, and left-over pollen from Marback. While home for Christmas my sister Trish Ann pollinated Lovely Lady with Marback. Today, I picked the pod, scared the seeds wouldn't be completely formed. All 14 seeds were just perfect! Thank you Trish!

If all goes well with this cross, it will be the first brug in my Cajun line. Trish and I are so excitied we've already picked a name....."Monika's Cajun Lady".

A special thank you Monika for giving me the opportunity to grow your German brugs.

Dollie, why were there such a small number of seed? Or was a small number intended? I wish you great success with your Cajun line. You've spoken of starting one before. :-)

Betty, not sure why the low number of seed. Would damaged limbs causing stress to L.L. from hurricane, and so many climate changes in a short period have anything to do with the production of seed? No, Trish didn't intend to get such a small amount of seed. We were both suprised at such a small amount of seed.

L.L. X's Marback should make a good cross. Lovely Lady's parents are Bolero X's Apricot Queen. Not sure of Marback's genes, but the beautiful bright gold- yellow is very pretty.

Thank you for the good-luck wishes on my Cajun line. Using Monika's brugs crossing them with each other, also crossing them with some of my special brugs from different hybridizers in the States I can't help but not have a beautiful Cajun line...lol, you can tell I'm thinking happy & positive about my brugs again.

Your Cajun line sounds wonderful Best of Luck! I would love to have any (and all) if you choose to sell. Us cajuns need to stick together. My mind is racing just thinking of names. LOL Liz

Thanks Nadine & Liz for the good luck wishes.

Great genes congratulations on your seeds ...have you peeled one? ...just wondering about the seed count ...because I have grown out so many pods and never seen a count like that. I am very curious as to why ...we don't have the variety that you have and I am wondering if this is common in rare hybrids (a trait?) or if the seed pod stops growing because of early very cold temps etc ...or ???? anyone know?

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

The amount of seeds in a pod depends on what time the pollination was done. After opening, the stigma stays full sticky for only a short time and looses then slowly its fertility.

Congratulations to the seeds. I hope you will get some nice seedlings out of it.

Well.. congratulations to you there Monica.. keep up te interesting work... but you've got to be there for the opening.. if there's to be enough seeds for all of us.. either that... or you're going to have to work more crosses..
just kidding you there... surely you're allowed a small amout of additional life also..
All the best for spring there...

I can not help but admire you knowledge of your crosses , genes, lines etc. i read some threads but mostly spend a lot of time on hosta since I have over 500 cultivars. i lost tags and has to ID my purchases last year. i bought brugs last year but a lot of them died because they were potted and I do not have room for them in the ground. Limited space because DH wants his yard for golf practice. You are very knowledgeable group and very helpful the ones that has question about brugs. Keep up the good work!!!!! Bellieg

Thankyou Monika ^_^ ...that explains a lot of things, so in effect the sooner you pollinate a newly unfurling bloom the better.

monika,
Thank you for that information on the stigma's loss of fertility. That explains a lot.

Monika, Thanks for this information. I didn't have a clue as to why this pod produced so few seeds. I'll email you updates and pitcures as soon as they start germinating. I soaked them overnight and planting them today. Lol, I know I'll get some beauties out of this cross as the two parents are perfect.

Gordon, your at the top of the list on getting some seeds. If all goes well in a few months seed will be heading your way.... I just pollinated a couple of brugs last week.

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

Well Dolly Dearest.. thanks... reguardless.. of my lack of space.. I do know planting them as fresh as possible.. gives them their best chance.. So.. I have little choice but to generate more of them.. They have come to me in my dreams.. and given me instructions as to their desires.. I am but a servant.. .... ..... in Love

Lol, Gordon.....have I told you lately your a nut? :)
