Totally new to starting seeds from Brugs, so I am wondering the best way to do it, and
how long until germination?
Thanks
Starting seeds from Brugs
Starting Brug seed is similar to starting other seeds. To give the seeds the best chance start with a sterile medium, be it potting mix, seed starting mix, coir, rockwool or seed plugs. Sterilize the seeds as well. There are several ways to sterilize the soil and seeds. Then you can choose from the following options:
1) Community pot or individual pots (plugs) - Use one community pot for each variety of seed. This method saves space. Depending on how far apart you place the seed, you will have to prick out the seedlings sooner or later to plant them in individual pots. Seeds planted in individual pots will take up more room initially, but saves you having to transplant so soon. DO NOT bury the seed. Brug seed needs light to germinate, but do press down on the seed to make good contact with the soil. Cover with plastic or place in baggies. Keep the soil moist.
2) To peel or not to peel - Brug seeds are covered with a corky cover. This cork does not have to be removed for the Brugs to germinate, but many people choose to remove it. The cork can be removed while it is dry or you can soak the corky seed first, then peel. I peel the cork off before I soak the seed. I don't damage the seed if I peel first. I have two reasons for peeling: knowing how many seeds I start off with and sometimes I don't keep the humidity up high enough on the seeds and the coat sticks and the cotyledons can't get out. Peeling avoids stuck cork.
Germination can take anywhere from a week or two to several months. So don't throw away the starting medium after the majority of the seeds germinate. There may be some stragglers that germinate later.
Sometimes you'll find the corky chamber is empty. The seed didn't form because pollination wasn't complete. If you don't peel the cork and plant as is, you'll wait forever for it to germinate. Knowing how many seed you plant will help you determine how many have yet to germinate.
