Friends of mine just returned from a trip to Washington where they visited with family in Gig Harbor and also saw this tree. Does anyone identify it?

That looks like a Monkey Puzzle tree. AKA Araucaria araucana.

You're most welcome. These are very slow growing trees. I became fascinated with these on a trip as a child to Vancouver B.C. When you see a large one, you know it was planted by someone no longer with us.

There is a Monkey Puzzle Tree out in the Boston Harbor area near here that I want to find again and get a picture of......the owners had climbed around and filled the tree with all sorts of stuffed Monkeys!!
