Brugs in full sun ok?

Disputanta, VA(Zone 7a)

I just put a brug (Knightii) in the ground, but now that I'm thinking about it, I wonder if full sun is too much. I've been keeping them in pots on the deck (Pt. sun). What do you folks who are in hot, humid summer climates (I'm zone 7) do? I couldn't find an info thread on brugs listed.

I grow most of my brugs in full sun here in Central Florida. They are all thriving!

Hi! I am new to brugs and i Always check the plant files here- sometimes after the fact (lol) but i check. It says your brug should do well in full sun and should be very large. If you find the 'need' to trim it I will gladly pay postage for a cutting. Good luck! Liz

Full sun generally means not much protection from wind and cold .
2 in full sun die back farther in winter than 4 in semi shade . They also have less wind damage and needs less water . More bugs - ants - snails - slugs tho .

Thanks everyone. I didn't realize the needs were different for each brug, so I'll start checking plant files for each. I have an Ecuador Pink getting ready to bloom in a 2 gal. pot (way too small). Should I put it in the ground now or wait till it finishes blooming? Thanks for all the advice.

edited to add: Liz, I'd be happy to try & share with you, but you'll need to remind me this fall around Oct. is good.

davis, A number of factors influence whether Brugs can handle full sun besides the specific cultivar: temperature, humidity, altitude, latitude, wind. You might try placing the pots in different locations to see where they grow best before placing in the ground. If the humidity is low, my Brugs seem to tolerate less sun.

Mine are in full sun for about 6 hours as long as I provide water for them to drink..and plant food as well...

Equador Pink...is tough.. and full sun is OK for it.. there....I have all of mine in full sun.. except for the varaigated ones.. they get some shade at some points in the day.. mostly they see sun from 6am to 8 PM here.. I'm in zone 7. they perfer some what of a buffer for the wind.. but t's not possible in some loations here...... once they grow up above the fence level.. inPanama they grow the brugs as a wind break for the coffee fields... but then they aren't looking for supreme brugs... but great coffee..
2 weeks to flowers here on some.... I can hardly wait..

gee, I'd love to see a pic of the blooming brugs in that windbreak, it must be awesome! Funny you should mention Equador Pink as you did because the morning after posting on it, I went out to see the bud hanging limp. Ya think she heard me thinking about putting her in the ground? LOL

an amazing place.. it seemsto always be raining..you can sense it.. but it never get you the slightest bit wet.. a ranbow is over the town.. and quite low to the ground.. a good part of the entire day.. so you know there's rain.. here the brug a a part of a contineous row along the roadway..growing up into a light pole

Is there enough water in the world for brugs? Mine drink copious amounts daily. I have one planted in shade and I still have one in a pot, trying to decide where to put the baby, but not in full sun here.

I have mine in full sun, here in Texas. I am right on the edge of the dessert, and the temps a month ago, has already been 107. When I planted mine, I put watersorb down in the hole first, then the plants! So far they are doing very well. I even have a few buds already.
top of pictures was taken late April, bottom was taken late May. it has grown a lot in one month!

if you live along the coast with high temps, very high day & night humidity, & 85 degree nights they fry no matter how much water you give them. I lost 12 that way at my old house. They were fine until July then could not take the sun

Being in a drought all last year, the humidity was low most of the summer, temperatures in the 90s during the day and 80s at night. All this forced my Brugs into summer dormancy until mid October. Fertilizer didn't have any effect at all on my Brugs. The leaves remained small, almost no growth at all, no blooms except for a noid I suspect is Lemon Twist. I lost some Brugs that seemed to get too much sun and they were in the sun only the first half of the day. Among the lost Brugs was Earth Angel. :-(

We've gotten 3" of rain in the past 2 days (aaaahhhh, so needed) I'd planted another brug in a shadier spot, so I'm going to wait a few days & see if either appear to have new growth.
I realized my Ecuador Pinks bud fell because it's getting ready to bloom! It's still in the pot & apparently happier than the others. I'm in a learning curve mode but it's all good.
