Tree seeds

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

I have just purchase some tree seed. Zelkova serrata, Acer palmatum Matsumurae, Acer palmatum, Viridis and also Zelkova sinica. Question is this, Will I be able to plant these seeds now and expect them to grow? Live in Ga. so expect them to winter outdoors. Do I have to go through the stratafication details? I want to see baby trees this year. Is there a possibilty?? Please help. Thanks

I am no expert but I think you are too late for this year. These do need to stratify for about 3 months. I put mine in the fridge around Jan/Feb.

shucks! I sure was looking forward to starting them right away. I sure do thank you for the answer, even if it wasn't what I wanted to hear. I love to garden and Bonsai is such an interesting pastime. It can't be a hobby because there is always something to do.

Keep them cool and dry and they should be OK. I wait till Nov./Dec. to order seeds. A reputable dealer will be able to keep them fresh longer.

Lol - I think you're going to need some work on that 'patience' thing - pretty much a prerequisite for bonsai practitioners.

Guess I'll put them in the refrigerator. Dog gone It I hope I don't forget them. I love the little jade plant. Is that an acorn shell? I messed up I ordered my seed first of May. I have a long wait. I have several Elm tree that I grew from seed. The oldest is about 20 years old and it is about 45" not including the pot. I keep it trimmed like a poodle cut. Pom Poms. I love to prune them. Thanks for all the advice. Hope I can help you sometime.

Is there a special way to send pictures? Could mine be too large to send? Have tried to send a couple-no luck. I browsed then hit send- no go.

The first time I had seeds stratifying in the 'fridge, my mother-in-law was staying with us. She thought it was something that had turned bad and thru them out. I have since changed my system...

Dennis, what do you do now? Do you wait til fall to plant the seeds? I so want to plant the ones I just received.

I wait till Jan/Feb. I primarily grow Trident maples, Korean Hornbeam, Chinese elms, Japanese maples. For those seeds I will soak in warm water for a couple of days. Then wrap the seeds in damp sphagnum moss, put them in a plastic bag and into the refridge for about 2-3 months. After about 60 days I start checking to see if any have begun to sprout. If they do, they go right into a flat. If not I'll wait for the 90 days and then they go into flats. Then wait....and wait...and wait. And maybe in about 5-7 years (after much tending, trunk chopping, etc) they may be pre-bonsai. MAYBE!!!

Dennis, I forgot to Thank you for the information. I try to plant things by the moonand I thought I might try that but haven't "I"m Waiting" Never have been too patient. Tomarrow, the sign is for pruning to encourage growth, so my pruneing shears are ready and so am I. That Elm tree is goig to get it's several time a year "poodle cut" It has such beautiful little leaves and always comes back shaggy. Haven't tried prueing those Maples, not as bad anyway. Husband might not appreciate it!!! thanks, again.
