I live in Zone 5b and want to redesign an attractive herb garden. Currently I have a 6 by 6 raised bed at the back of my one acre. I want to design something closer to the house so that I will use them more and enjoy their fragrances. I love aromatic herbs and culinary herbs. I would love to dabble in medicinal, but know very little.
Would you mind sharing your herb garden pictures or ideas?
Thanks!
Amanda

Robin --
It is nice to meet you as well!! I love your little "before" herb garden....and your "after" WOW!
I noticed the big tree --- do you have your herbs in full sun or part sun? I
I currently have lemon verbena, dill, rosemary, and basil in a pot near my back door. Way out at the back of the property, I have Lemon Balm, lemon Thyme, Creeping thyme, Garlic, Chives, Sage, Pineapple Sage, Parsley, Oregano....I think that is all.
Any suggestions?
Thank you for sharing your pictures. I am more of a visual person!!
Amanda
I am loooking to design an herb not carden outside my back door for culinary herbs. Any I deas?
How much space do you have Artwestallis? I wanted to do that but it didn't that I had enough to make a good design and incorporate alot of different herbs. I ended up building an 8 foot stack stone circular bed.
That is a great idea! Do you have some ideas for knot gardens dahlianut? I have lots of space!!
Amanda
that also is a problem limited on space but do lke the idea aof a circular one you have pics?
I am very interested in everyone's designs also....my entire yard is only 43 x 20 so I just have assorted mixed beds right now....I would like to start moving things and getting some kind of order to my gardens....right now in the line of herbs I have savory, thyme, golden Oregano, several Basils, Garlic, Chives, Dill, Tarragon, Lemon Balm, Parsley, Rosemary, Yarrow, Borage, Monarda, Lavender, mint and Sage. I am always looking for more herbs.
would like to see them now herbal betty
Me too! They look gorgeous!
Herbal Betty, I've seen some of your pictures in previous years. Always a wonderful treat. You really have the knack for designing and growig.
I could look at your garden all day long herbal betty. How do ever make yourself come inside?
Herbalbetty I would be outside all day long in that garden. Nice ideas from everyone especially when you have limited space. My space is limited because my husband likes the lawn too much and I have alot of shade in my backyard. We have two raised beds on the side of the house and we are adding a third. I have flowers and herbs around the beds but would like to have any area for just herbs.
That's just ONE part of the yard. I have a bunch of other raised beds in the "barnyard". Then, there is the woodland area. The birdhouse bed. The island bed. The fruit orchard and berry patch. The veggie garden. The lavender field (too young to take good pics yet). The mushroom logs. The rose arch/tunnel. There are days when I am outside all day! It's a good thing.
I have had alot of success with putting lavender in raised beds. The native plants do well in the soil but I have the most success with the plants in raised beds. My soil seems to have too much clay.
Betty, It looks like a park. I'd pay admission to see it. I have a couple questions if you don't mind.
How long have you been working this garden?
What is the lovely sky blue clematis I see there on the left of the picture?
and a question I ask everyone,
How do you keep the deer away?
Well, thanks for the kind words everyone. That's very sweet.
Pam, we moved to this property in the late autumn of 2001. Started working the gardens the spring of 2002. It's been little by little, adding things here and there. When we moved in, where you see gardens was all eye-high wild parsnip and other weeds. The pictures I posed were from 2 years ago. The clematis that you are seeing is H.F. Young. It has grown and bloomed prolifically for us. Polish Spirit, Betty Corning, and Duchess of Albany are also impressive growers for us.
Deer were causing me great grief around here when we moved in. We tried everything: soap, garlic/hot pepper spray, human hair, noise makers, mothballs around the perimeter of the property, my husband "marking" his territory, you name it. We finally put in fencing. First, it was the plastic deer fencing. That did NOT hold up well between the heavy snows we get and the dogs that roam around here. So, we put up 5 strands of wire (which everyone thinks is electric, but it is not) and that has worked great. Deer could still jump the 7 ft high fence, but they don't. Knock on wood!
Well Betty, as long as the deer don't read your posting here, you're ok. That sounds like something we might be able to do. The other morning I came out to find that the deer had browsed off the seven flowers huge flower stems that were about to bloom on my newly-planted hosta. It was the only night I forgot to move the Adarondak chairs around it to create a 'fort'. I was so 'p____d' I wanted to cry. By the way, your chairs are beautiful. They look custom-made. Mine are inexpensive, but I can move them around by myself. Looking forward to seeing your '09 pictures too.
