I was quite impressed by this large black alocasia. The fence is over 1.5 metres high. Would love to get some but haven't seen them available anywhere.
Black alocasia
That plant is the Alocasia macrorrhizos "Black Stem", or what I call the Black Mac. I've seen specimens almost as large as that one here in south Florida but the plant does not like cool or cold weather. However, I have crossed this plant successfully with several other Alocasia species, and have progeny with black petioles and main veins. We'll see if any of them are hardier than the Black Mac.
Thanks LariAnn. I didn't think they were the macrorrhizos, but I couldn't see over the fence at the base of the plant. The fence was too high, even when I stepped back up onto the higher roadway.
This plant won't have any problems with cold, it's in Madang, PNG. I haven't seen them locally (here) but they wouldn't have any problems either.
