raspberry plant

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

My neighbor dug up her raspberry plant and gave me a nice rootstock with a couple stems. I didn't have anywhere to plant it but I had a pretty pig plastic flower pot (probably 3 gallon size). Do you think I can keep it in this type of container? Or will I have to find a place in the garden for it to get berries?

There is a relationship between root size and plant size. Your raspberry will not get as large or be as productive as a plant in the ground.

Containers have a 'bonsai effect' on all plants.

Also, raspberry plants send up runners and multiply. I think you would want more than one plant to get enough raspberries to eat. I started with 6 plants and have a lot more now. Now the problem is keeping them in control!

I had 2 but they didn't make it. Shriveled up and died. My neighbor gave them to me. Maybe it was the wrong time of the year to transplant them.
