Need info on making a good mini hosta trough, please help!

Hi, I love the new mini hosta and they get lost in the garden. How deep should a trough be to maintain a hosta grouping? Do you drill a drainage hole? Has anyone made these and are using them? If so, please help me with ideas, recipes, links that you were successful with.
