how many lotus can fit in this space . its about knee high when i stand in it . and maybe 4-5 x 3 i didnt measure . i want to try the idea in this thread . http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=6001011
i have a seed in water right now filed and everything . but the other seeds in the batch arnt viable . they were just powder inside . so i ordered some more .
is it to late in the season to order tubers . and if it is how many of the seedlings do i plant .
hi every one . newbie here needs advice
It depends on the Lotus. If it's one of the big ones, one could easliy take up the entire space in a single season. It looks deep enough for a hardy lotus to safely overwinter. It will be gorgeous when you get it done. Are you going to line the planting hole with anything to hold water?
woa sorry it took so long to respond . my son spilled my coffee on the key board and it took me a while to get around to getting a new one .
my bog is lined with a pond liner now . it is filled almost half way with the dirt that came from the hole which is like clayish but good dirt , im really happy with how it turned out .now i just need a lotus. and some more border rocks .
Coffee + keyboard = trouble! Which ever lotus you choose will certainly be a happy one. I can't think of any better planting conditions than what you've done. I grew a 'Mrs. Perry D. Slocum' in a giant lotus tub ( 75 lbs of kitty litter) in my pond two years ago. It got 5' tall and nearly as wide. Just imagne how well your lotus will do.
well i broke down and ordered mrs perry. lol . i just couldn't get it out of my head . plus knowing that it was in the pic that inspired me i had to . i do have a seed that looks like its going to sprout . so ill give that to mom she has a basin that it could go in . i spent almost 40 on the liner i had to have a special one that i know would get huge .
i got it from muddy waters . there was only one rating in the watch dog . it was positive but weird . they kept calling the nursery daves garden . any way the sight looked good and they seemed ok . plus they only charge 20 for the tubers because shipping is so high. it was 35 total . thats what some places charge for the plant . i got a conformation right away thats always a good sign .
You won't regret the choice. It's about the most popular and best selling of all the lotus. The flowers are gorgeous. They form those wonderful big brown seed heads. The leaves are big lime green saucers that never get ratty looking. I don't grow it anymore because of its' size. It was just too big for my pond. If you've grown lotus before you know to handle the tuber with care. The growing point is easily damaged and if you lose that you lose the plant.
ive never grown one . but ive read that . i just hope the one i get is dormant.it probably wont be .lol
It might be. At the most It probably will have no more than a few early leaves. Here's a great source of info on planting a mail order lotus tuber - complete with pictures. You can't miss if you follow these instructions.

The tubers at this time of the year are not dormant and may look a little funky with shipping but spring right back. I just recvd some tubers from TWL (my puppy kept eating the ones in co-op) and recvd something called (?) Russian Red I believe. They looked great and were huge. I just throw them into my bog and they are floating but already sprouting greenery. I have so much fencing around the bog you would think I had diamonds in the mud. . . . The puppy grabbed and ripped apart the previous lotus' many times before the finally succumbed to death. They are a lot more tough than I ever thought they could be. . .
ok i got my lotus !! it looks great . i got it from muddy waters . he sent me a 2 and a half foot runner and something that looked like a linked sausage . im new to lotus but i can tell a good plant . so its in the water now do i just let it float or stick it in the mud . and how do i plant the runner . its full of roots and growing tips. 35 bucks was a steal for what i was sent.
Did you look at the instructions on Bonnie's Plants. It's step by step with pictures. Real easy. Congratulations on getting a good plant!
it has 4inch leaves and all that. the instructions were for a dormant tuber would it be the same way .
Yes - except that the water level would be just high enough float the current leaves. When new growth starts from the tuber raise the water level gradually to get the new leaves floating at the level you will keep in the bog. Mrs. Perry Slocum can take water up tp 2' if I remember correctly. They'll grow fast.
thanks for all your help . i tried to plant the runner but its curved so i didnt get all the roots planted but it should be good the water has been in for a few days so its warm .
Get your camera and post a pic around July 1 when it's blooming its head off!
heck, why wait till then, take some pics and post them now..... I'm so interested in this thread. I just can't get over how big those lotus get.
Janet - who is waiting for pics...LOL
sorry i keep leaving my camera at moms . lol ill get it tonight
oh yah i for got to say that my seed did sprout and i convinced my mom to bury a large rubermaid tote as sort of a preformed liner . i didnt want to waste the seed lol. so stay tuned for pics of that . ill post pics tonight when i get done with work.
wonderful, looks to me to be the makings of something wonderful to come.
thanks for the picture.
Janet
I like what ya did with the hens and chicks by using the holes. Great idea.

That leaf is already huge. I noticed there was shade over the bog area. Is it sundown? My Russian Reds are leafing out but not nearly that size. I am letting the water go down a bit so I can get the tubers into the mud a little. Slowly I will add more water. I don't know how and where all the frogs are coming from but they did find that bog and like it more than the pond and stream. I have about 6 in that little space right now including a tiny little guy the size of about a quarter. Very cute. They are getting used to me and don't seem to mind me being around them or messing around with the bog.
theres a runner and a tuber . i didnt float the tuber i put it in the mud but its in a high spot . theres 2 inches of water over it . i dont know if that was bad or not . it was sundown.
ok another question . when i got the tuber there was about 2-3 inches of water over the dirt. so i placed the tuber in the dirt and put some dirt over it so it wouldnt float . it has been hot and the water temp was good, it had been raining for the past 2 days and there is alot more water in there . do i leave it alone or gently raise it out of the dirt . it hasnt sprouted leaves . the runner i got with it is doing great .
I've never seen blocks with that support at the corners before.
Where did ya get them or is it only a BIG O thing.LOL
We might be moving back home to kentucky and if we do and those blocks are only in your area, I just might have to make a trip down there to get some.
Janet
there was just a pile of cinders and bricks here when we moved in. ive used every one of both
Excellent recycling project!
dont mind the crabgrass in the back i havnt made to that bed yet
Wow! That is looking great!
Oh iris I can see all the hard work you have put into this project is paying off.. Im gonna have to look into this, I love the idea of these mud bog things.. lol.. and those leaves are so pretty!!! How much sun does it need a day? Does it matter if its pretty much full sun the whole day? My one side of yard is pretty much full sun.. Going to check the link for more info.. Thanks Iris for posting this thread...
That is absolutely stunning! Congratulations!
Brenda
Beautiful and delicious looking bloom. I would hate to see it close up at nite. I even love the look of the leaves with water on them. Laverne
