Somebody remind me again...

North Augusta, ON

why it is a good thing to have more than one gardener in the family? As much as I love Mom and DH I sometimes wish they'd STAY OUT OF MY GARDENS!!!

I know, I know...Mom is 71 and I am lucky to have her here to share with and I will surely miss her when she is gone...but sheesh!

I just get things the way I like them and I go out and every things moved. I love my old fashioned bell flowers and I don't care if they spread like mad, I can rip em out when they get out of hand so LEAVE EM ALONE! But she hates them and I guess she wins by seniority. Same with my violets...poof...vanished.

I love my waves of forget-me-nots too, they fill in the empty spaces until the perennials get big enough and the annuals start to appear. But noooo...they have to be ripped out before they've even finished blooming. Yesterday the pair of them ripped out 3 wheel barrow loads of stuff...I wanna cry, I wanna scream...I wanna just give up gardening altogether...I mean, why bother if I can't ever do anything I want to do??

OK, I feel better now, thanks for letting me rant ^_^

Put a fence and a gate and lock it. Or fake snakes !

i would send mom to bed without dinner and DH to the couch for an extended period of time.

Although, he did build me this lovely rock "fence" around my raised bed. What's a girl to do?

That's why we're here. Ranting is good for the soul. I kinda like wha's suggestion. ^_^

My compost heap is just that. DH keeps adding stuff to it and it is so heavy I can't turn it over. There are grasses in there and I have to weed it before I use it. It kinda defeats the purpose. Maybe I should print out a primer on composting and leave it out for him to discover. LOL

Can you give them their own area to garden in and then you can have your own that's off limits to them???

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

I like Jen's idea. That way they can leave your stuff alone.

That's just what I was going to suggest, 3G! I'd be upset too, and thankfully, you have lots of sympathetic friends here that understand your perspective. This too shall pass.

Just change your DG name???

LOL Victor!!

I'm so thankful for all of my DG friends that understand!!

yes venting with us is good.... the good and bad part with Randy is he won't even as much as pull a weed unless I tell him it's ok... I am sure having three of you has it's goods and bads

And my husband is a stinking bone head! He mowed one patch of iris's again! I want to choke him.

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

My husband only hepls in beds he can figure out what is plant and what is not. If I need help somewhere else, I need to be there to ID anything he doesn't know. Anything other than iris or daylily.

I know Threegardeners. One year my mom dug up and stored all of my Hyacinth bulbs. She confused them with the Dahlias. But now, I wish she was still around to drive me crazy or share my excitement over a special bloom. Moms!!!

Can you (very nicely) tell her what your garden means to you? Sounds like she isn't aware of how your gardens are very special to you? Maybe you could set aside some space for her to grow her own garden? Just some ideas...

Stormy - I think you've hit the nail on the head.......when it comes to our older Mothers.... you just have to think about how lucky you are to still have her. I miss mine so much whenever I see a pretty orchid. And tonight we started out lady slipper count to see if we can top the 300+ we counted last year. I always think of my Mom when we do it, because she came up to the farm in 1990 and got so excited when she spotted a wild lady slipper patch. So far in our count from tonight, we are at 215 and we haven't even done the long road yet!

That's wonderful DonnieBrook. I've never seen one growing in the wild. Our moms were of a generation that delighted in small gifts.

You just reminded me of the time my mother called me at work and had my assistant interrupt an important meeting so mom could tell me all about the giant purple ball that sprung up in the garden. She had never seen an Allium before!!

db that's great - lady slippers are hard to find. i had two and now one is left still waiting for it to bloom.

Well, Lady Slipper Fans, the final count is in! On our way to an antique gasoline engine show and big flea market, we did the final stretch of road where we do our annual count. We have a record-breaking 344 this year! It was just a grand time!! And there were lots of trillium and these trout lilies as well......but they weren't included in the count.

Equally exciting to us is the current presence of one of our resident wild turkey hens up in our meadow WITH 12 JUST-BORN TEENY LITTLE BABIES!!

Here's a shot of her and her buddies about a week ago......

Wow! That is an impressive count!! I thought I was doing good with the 8 of them in my front garden, by the pond.

My garden "helpers" really aren't all that bad, just a weak moment on my part...you know how things pile up and then we lose it over something trivial?

Mom and I spent a wonderful day planting seeds in every available nook and yes, I even ripped out a few things myself ^_^

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

We knew that all along, 3G. As many have said, this is the best place to vent and get beyond it. No harm! Glad you had a wonderful day working together pulling out the plants you loved once upon a time! LOL And 8 lady slippers in your garden.....WOW! Lucky you!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I think something happened to the one turkey that used to come visit me every day... we haven't seen her since (not joking) thanksgiving last year... she was funny... like the dogs she knew when I came home that I would go in the yard to see the flowers and always give her some bird food... she would come running down the woods behind our house ... it would sound like a train coming with all the brush back there

:(
