Cant you put three adult silkies in with 6 week old chicks? The reason I ask is that from everything I have read on here they make excellent mothers(but probably with there own chicks).I was going to move them out to the coop when they are 6 weeks old and am getting 2 silkie hens and a rooster. My common scents says no but wanted to here from the experts.
question about putting chicks with adult silkies
I have 10 silkies in with my chicks about the same age. no problems. 3 of the silkies are roos too. Very sweet birds.
Adult Silkies may not mix well with young ones. We have 6 Silkes 4 went broody and hatched babies. When one was ready to go back to the "big pen" we put the babies in with one of the others mommies and her babies. She took them in but not without pecking at them. She never fully accepted them but did tolerate them. Silkies are very sweet little hens and do make very good mothers and sitters. We have had 2 of the 4 that hatched eggs go broody again and they are sitting on eggs again.
