Straw Bale Vets & Friends

Wake Forest, NC

I really enjoyed the last few posts about some of our military experiences.

So, with Memorial Day fast approaching, I'm going to see if ya'll would like to have a place where we could ramble on a little more without crowding the garden discussions.

This includes stories, pics, links, etc., anything Veteran/Military-related.

It's getting late, so I don't have time for a story, but I'll start with a quick link to a short, but great video I saw recently:

Any vets remember their drill sergeant's name?

Of course, you do! :-)

Mine was Chief Thomas and Petty Officer Iovine.

Thomas was retiring and Iovine was a newlywed. They pretty much left us alone and a few of us "older" recruits pretty much took care of day-to-day business.

Wasn't bad at all down in sunny Orlando, where the USN girls went to boot camp, too.

Good morning tubbyand Kent! We are the first so far on this thread.
Tubbytee I am about 75 miles southeast of Atlanta, give or take a couple of Flying Crows!
I wasnt personally a military person, but my Father, Bless Him, was and my eldest Daughters Husband was Army.
Im thankful everyday for our Country and for those who keep it that way!
So this Memorial Day I am dedicating my thankfulness to the memory of:
1st Lt. Joshua Highland and the four troops that fell with him on August 22, 2005, in Afghanistan.

El Reno, OK

I remember my Company Commander, he walked like a pigeon. He was a very hard man, but he taught me some very important lessons. He taught me how to operate with a team and many other important things in life, and these i still carry today with me.

That M16 and double timing was the Pitts though. I loved San Diego in the Spring of 82! but will never forget my experience. Now i look some 27 years later and have since retired from the Navy....My last cruise was a Great Lakes cruise. That cruise was one of the best times that i had ever had. A Frigate in the Great Lakes...fishing in the Great Lakes was very good. Great memories!!

You know i thank God daily!... I love my Heavenly Father, my wonderful wife, my five children and my three grandchildren and two on the way. I love my country. I pray that we as a country make the right choices so that God will not take his hand of protection from us.....

I thank those men and women who have served this nation and i pray that God continues to bless and protect those that have went before us and served this country!....Blessings my new friends....Bill

OMG, Kent! I'm not going to cry, I'm not going to cry. Yes I am. What a beautiful picture. I'm not a vet but my son spent four years in the Marines and is now twenty years in the Coast Guard.

Big hugs to all our military, past and present,

Helen

National Anthem: still gives me goose bumps and gets me to attention.

The Gold Standard for me was Whitney Houston's rendition at Super Bowl XXV, Jan. 25, 1991.

I can still remember watching this game and getting goose bumps as she sung this song.

On a side note, I had to go to Jacksonville, NC, yesterday to pick someone up and bring him back to Wake Co.

The place I had to go took me right by Camp Lejeune, and it's like I can almost sense a military base nearby. My spirit just locks in on the esprit de corps, so to speak of the local population. It's hard to explain, but a vet will get it.

My dad, Rudolph (Rudy) Kern, was in the Navy for 20 years. It was a tough life for my Mom (especially with 3 kids) and she finally gave him the ultimatum...come home or the marriage is over. As a Navy brat, however, all I have are wonderful memories of living in Canada, Germany, Italy, Norfolk, and Staten Island. I am so thankful to have had the privilege of living in those places, making new friends, and learning the languages, including English! I'm proud of my dad for having served his country for all those years. He retired in 1964 as 1st class boatswain's mate, I believe. He spent a lot of time on frigates, but the only ship I remember the name of is the USS Rockbridge. He died 10 years ago and I still miss him. Here's to you Pop!

The pic is of a coin I purchased for $10.00 in memory of him. It can be found at www.americandefendersoffreedom.com
They can be purchased for our current troops or a donation given for which coins are purchased and given to Chaplains to give to our troops. Hundreds of thousands have already been given to our troops all over the world.
