When birds are lost

Blythe, CA(Zone 10b)

I've had two birds come into my yard that are rare to my area ... a northern cardinal and a rose-breasted grosbeak. They have only been reported as seen maybe three times in 5 years. So if these birds have gotten lost do they ever find their way back, do they migrate with the other birds or where do they go?

Sometimes they make their way back, other times they don't. Some are the vanguard of new colonisations, others are just lost. No way of knowing in an individual case!

Thanks Resin... the cardinal only stayed two days while the grosbeak has been here five days. There are a lot of other grosbeaks here that migrate thru this area this time of year so he must be just traveling with them.

You should be sure to report your sightings on Cornell's e-bird feature

Hummm... I reported it to a group that reports rare bird sightings to Birds of North America... should I do both ?

yes, I've been sooooo busy. ... it's an all day thing anymore just trying to keep the birds fed and the plants watered. I think I got carried away with planting...lol Good to see you are still here too. The baby owls just got done flying away and I found another tree that a pair of owls nest in too so I'll be watching them next year. The fish & game came out a couple of weeks ago and banded the babies... darn, and I was at work so I missed it. I hear it's quite interesting to watch them. How dare them not tell me they were coming...lol

Your cardinal seems much darker than the ones I see in East Texas. Our males have much more red. This is due to diet, age, and season, I guess? Great photo!

From what I was told it was a northern cardinal.... I guess that makes a difference.

i was going to add that your cardinal has kind of an odd crest too. it looks like Lyle Lovett!

lol... he was cute (the bird)... I knew it was a cardinal when I saw it but didn't know there were different kinds, I guess this one came from back east, or something like that...lol
