This plant is growing outdoors in San Antonio, Tx, in average garden soil, in partial shade among Live Oaks. The leaves are dark green, about 1.5 - 2 inches wide, soft and flaccid or grassy, and about 24 - 30 inches long, growing in a grass-like clump. The bloom scape has risen to about 5.5 feet high and began blooming the first week in May.
Need ID, please.
Well - the inflourescence looks like a Pitcairnea (or Pepinia - not sure where the taxonomists are on this one right now.) There are many Pitcairneas so I wouldn't even hazard a guess as to the species if I even have the genus right.
Dave.
Dave,
Sorry I didn't respond earlier. Pitcairnia it is. I made contact with the fellow who gave me the plant. He said it was P. longifolia. I have found very few references to this species, most from 1800's references. Can't find that it's a synonym for a more current name. I am not comfortable with this species id. Still looking.
