One plant...two different blooms?

York, PA(Zone 6b)

My Hoya tjadasmalangensis has two totally different blooms on the same plant. I noticed the peduncles were red and yellow but thought somehow the lighter of the two would adjust. Is this a normal thing for any or all hoyas?
This plant is mature and the yellow blooms are happening on one stem..full of only peduncles...maybe 15...all getting ready to open.
The reddish blooms are happening on the rest of the plant.
Any thoughts??

My only thought is that I'm sure glad I have this plant. Both variations of the flower are really, really pretty. Can't venture an opinion as to if there's a logical reason for it though.

Joni...my only guess is that it might have had something to do with shipping it to you, because I know some of the rachis were forming blooms at the time.

I would send it to DL...ask him. If I can find them, I will post the flowers of H. tjad. per DL - color can change but on the same plant????

Well...here is the photo of H. tjadamanguensis posted by DL on another forum:

Carol,
As far as I can tell there are two plants in that pot so yes that would be the reason.
Sometimes when I think it's two plant though it's really just one that has been laying on the soil and has put out roots that way?

But... now I notice...the plant that is blooming the yellow has a new peduncles that appears to be red? I will follow it's progress and let you know.
I guess plants too can have split personalities. I counted the peduncles on the yellow side...28 with more forming!!!

yes Lourdes...a great one for your wish list...very attractive leaves despite the kooky blooms! They smell nicce too...at least the yellow ones do.

Anxious to see if the yellow blooms revert or if it IS two plants!

Minneapolis, MN(Zone 5a)

Just ran across this thread.

The stem with the yellow flowers could also be a sport, and untimately, a new "cultivar" of this plant. (:o)

Can you update us on what has happened since the middle of May? I'd be interested in hearing what ended up happening with this plant.
Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike,
Not much has happened except...the yellow side has continued to bloom over and over. The red side has grown a bunch of new leaves but no more blooms.
The plant has met it's fate...I just took a cutting from the yellow side that contains the 24 peduncles. Maybe the rest of the plant will concentrate on something else...like putting out new growth.
Too much of a good thing is boring to me...
Thanks for inquiring.

Joni

Hi Joni,
Thanks for the update. It will be interesting to see if the cutting/new plant continues to bloom with yellow flowers or if the flowers revert back to "normal".
Thanks again,
Mike
