Pleas help me identify this bird

St. Johns, Canada

This is an injured bird my grandfather found in his drive way, it was probably struck by a car.
It's wing is broken and I'v tried calling animal rescue services without luck, and since it's sunday the vets are closed,
it was very agitated but couldn't move very much.
We put it in a shed and have given it water and some food.
If it lives through the night we'll look for help again, any sudgestions or help is welcome!

Watch out for that bill, it could take an eye out if it wanted to fight back.

Hi K, Here is a place that you can check for rehabbers.

You could also ask a local vet for info on rehabbers.

Thanks for the help! I did a search and read afew articles about them, very interesting.

Poor thing, I think it's a little off course from were it should be, We are in Newfoundland, Canada.
Yes that beak made me very nervous, We had to throw a blanket over it to get it in the shed.
I won't be abel to find frogs, we do have frozen fish.

There are rescue and rehab services for wild animals here, they won't be open till tomorrow.
I guess I'll post here if anything happens.

Good luck & be careful!

Good luck! Best wear safety goggles when handling it at all.

Whole fish up to 15-20cm long should slip down fine, IF it recognises them as food when they're out of water and not moving! Thaw it first of course ;-) If it doesn't take it right away, try 'teasing' it with the fish (wave the fish head-first in front of its face) to tempt it to peck at it.

I contacted The wildlife and safety people this morning and they've just taken the bird away, they said there's not much they can do for it so it's probably going to be euthanised. I feel bad about it but the bird's wings and legs were a mess I can't see that it would fly again even after healing.

Wish I had better news, thanks for the information and advise anyway.

I was wrong about them not being a local bird, I'd never seen one before and neither had my grandfather or anyone else who saw it, apparently their local name is Marsh Hen.
