What is the name of this bulb?

A friend gave me some bulbs last year and I planted them but not being familiar with most bulbs I don't know what they are but they are beautiful. Also should I deadhead them after bloom?

The flower on the left is fading and that is why I ask if I should deadhead it?

It's a canna of some sort... maybe 'President' or a lookalike.http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/37506/

I'd deadhead it unless you want seeds (seed production just takes some energy away from replenishing the bulb).

Critter -- How far down should I deadhead the dried flower? As you can see it has a long stem.

Down to the first set of leaves below the bloom. Nice cannas! Next year you'll be telling us how to grow them, lol.

Yeah! They really are pretty! This could be contagious...

Tplant...cannas are Great plants for our tropical enviroment. They can also take a great deal of water, so can be planted around the edges of ponds, etc. You can dig up the rhizomes and divide them, leaving a growing eye on each one, and really get a large fenceline of them if you want to. They come in pinks, reds, oranges, and yellows (as the more common varieties) and then pinks, peaches, multi colors, red leaved varieties, etc. You'll be hooked soon.

MerryMary -- I am already hooked! Do they bloom more than once per season?

Yes, I dont cut mine down after they bloom...occassionally you can get seeds (about the size of a marble) on the stems. New bud columns will emerge very close to the old bloom column. If you cut them back, the 2nd one doesn't get going. They will also continue to send up more plants from developing eyes on the rhizome (which is a better way to grow them than seeds, but seeds are free!)

where would we find the seeds??? I have picasso and cleopatra ((sp?)) that have bloomed. How deep do we plant the seeds after we find them?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

if the flower managed to set seeds, you'll see a large swelling develop after the petals drop... the developing seed(s) is inside.

like this...

and do we let it dry on the stem then pick? like other seeds?

Boy! I'm really getting hooked on bulbs. I had a beautiful Bird of Paradise that I cut and let my grandson give to his Kindergarten teacher for the fantastic job that she did for teaching him to read and write? At his age, to me, this was a tremendous accomplish-
ment! It was my prize possession and took years to bloom and my best way to show my appreciation. God bless our teachers. I am so proud of him. I'm going to set up a Gladioli bed for the fall planting.

I gave my kids teachers plants as an appriciation gift too!!! I gave then Peace Lily plants in decorative planters. The teachers were so happy!!! I think teachers are underappriciated at times!
