Mutants

I did not set out to grow hairy cucumbers. However, mothers don't always choose the children they get.

For some reason I am having difficulty this year with cucumbers. Last year they were perfect. I am thinking I got greedy and put too many too close together. The ones in my raised box are not thriving, no matter what I do, and these in the bucket are growing strange things. A couple grew too big too fast. Many die before they finish growing. Then there are these. Not sure what to say about these.

I have a cuc plant every 6-8 inches in this bucket. That is chicken wire two sections tall for them to climb on. Should I pull out some or a lot of them? They are due for feed, but I don't think that has anything to do with the actual problem of fuzzy fruit.

Are those Lemon Cucumbers? Are they crossed with Chewbacca? lol I have no idea about the fuzziness. How do they taste? Do you shave them before eating them? :)

OMG! I just saw the last pics you posted!! LOL I haven't seen anything like that. Hopefully somebody can help you, I'm clueless but thanks for sharing your furry, funny fruit.

I was thinking Kiwi, but I hope not. I don't like kiwi.

Did you plant those from saved seeds?

No, packaged.

Your hairy cucumbers have put me on a search to find out what is going on. It seems some types will do that. Are they Carosello Cucumbers? Here's a pic of one.... http://solanaseeds.netfirms.com/carosellomezzolungo4.jpg

Ewwweee. That does not look appetizing to me. It that is the case, you can't trust Lowes seed packets.

What kind are they supposed to be?

Are you sure those are not a melon? They look just like my baby cantaloupe.

Ha! Wouldn't be the first time I mixed up seeds this year. I guess we'll see, won't we. I don't think so though.

I think LoneStar called it, unless of course you didn't plant any cantaloupe. If you did plant cantaloupe too go check them out and report back...don't be surprised if your melons look bumpy and weird and suspiciously like cucumbers. WAYYYYYY TOOO FUNNY!!!!

Yep, I bet that's what happened. I wondered what happened to the cantaloupe when the winter squash started growing off the plants I thought were cantaloupe. Yikes!!!!

At least I know it's not a mutant after all though.
