Lost two babies

Brookville, PA(Zone 5a)

well went up this morning to feed the kids and went into the little peep coop, and did a count..well there were only 9, so i started checking, and 3 were behind the feed bag. didnt know it but the light burnt out over nite and they must have gone behind the bag to feel safe..well 2 were gone, and i brought the third one down here..she is weak, but starting to get more alert..she couldnt walk at first, but now is getting moving..i'm gonna let her rest in the house then take her back up..she even ate alittle of my conure feed..she was on top of the two dead ones, might be the only reason she made it..i think they suffocated each other..getting a new heat bulb today as its supposed to go into the 30's tonight..
they are alittle over a month old and are starting to get big..
sure wasnt a good way to start the day..

I am so sorry! Once when I left for a few days, my DH misunderstood and turned the heat lamp off on my week old chicks every night--two died while I was gone and two more after I came home. But the rest recovered slowly and were beautiful birds. I hope yours do as well.

OH no! How terrible! I hope the little one makes it. Getting that chilled is a bad thing.. :(
I'm sorry that happened to you.

Sorry about your loss Cindy. It is never easy no matter how you lose them is it? They are just so frail at that young age. After they are a couple months old it's a dfferent story altogether isn't it.

Yes those heat lamps are terrible on the electric bill, I run two of them at around fifty bucks a month plus the cost of the bulbs. I have been waiting for the feds to show up to see if I am growing marjuana or something.LOL Haystack

I wonder if it's cause I use the dimmers on all my lights.. .but I can't see any rise in my electric bill.. even when I had 4 brooders, a hatcher and 2 bators, and 4 plant lights going. But then again, I'm in California and don't really have to warm the house much in the winter, compared to other zones..

Lodi, United States

You know I really have never understood that, ZZ. Everytime I turn on a heat lamp or incubator, my electric bill shoots up. That is one reason I was pleased to learn that a 100 watt red flood light worked just as well as a 250 watt red brooder light for my little flocks.

You must be doing something right.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

I use 150 watt heat lamp and only leave it full blast for a very short time, if at all.. then drop it down to 3/4's on the dimmer by day 3.. In 3 weeks, they are down to room temp.
Also, you have a different Power company..wonder if that makes a difference?

Lodi, United States

Different power company! Yes that does explain it. The infamous Lodi Electric Company has come up with so many ways to get money they are not entitled to, it makes your head spin. They were recently exposed as having created a "tier" system where if you go over a certain amount they raise the rate on all of it. Unfortunately they didn't inform any one about it and no one knew until their was an expose in the paper.

But their best to date is to decide they will estimate your bill--which invariably ends up being two to three time what it normally is. If you protest, they say they can't help it, it is what the computer's logarithm says it should be (no, not based on your previous bills); then they say you can pay what you think you owe--but you will be hit with a $10 late payment fee for not paying their estimate. I have been billed three winters in a row monthly bills of nearly $500 a month when my actual bill is closer to $200--I don't have central heat or air conditioning. If you do pay the exaggerated amount, the next bill is very low--but they have had the extra money and its interest for the month--if you don't, they keep the $10 late fee--even though they admit you never did actually owe them the money.

Can you tell I'm bitter?:0)

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

ummmm yeah, but I don't blame you!!

Sheeesh Catscan!!! $500.00 a month for an electric bill. That is incredible! I would be smoking with anger at those crooks. Big business and the Gov gets away with so much, it makes me sick. Is it any wonder we have people going postal every now and then. I was unhappy with my electric bill of $150.00 every two months. I think I'll just (fermme la bushe) shut my mouth from now on.

Cindy here is a pic of my girl (black) and her hatch (roo) mate. He has been sulking every since she died. I feel so sorry for him, the rest of the flock wants nothing to do with him. Hay

Cindy, I am really sorry about the loss. I am glad the third one made it though. It has been getting really cold out our way also. We have been having frosts almost every night. Then it gets really sunny during the day. {{HUGS}} I know the others will be great!!

Brookville, PA(Zone 5a)

thanks again everyone!! yes the little one is doing great..i got a 150w white bulb this morning and that will help keep the chill off for the next few nights..we are getting frost tonight again..then hopefully things will warm up..
WOW an elec bill of $200! i would be livid..my house bill is usually about $70, and the one with the heat bulb is usually 45 so thats why i got upset..but i guess i wont be anymore. so things are really more expensive in calif..yipes, i'll stay here in podunk PA..
have a great day all!!
