New computer, new system, HELP PLEASE!

Mother's Day brought a new computer! Can anyone help me with the following?
1)Windows mail replaced Outlook Express. Spell check doesn't work. Checked their forum and their "fix" didn't work. Said click on tools, options, spelling, choose language, etc. When I click on tools, those tabs don't come up. Any ideas?
The system is Vista, computer is Toshiba.

2)one suggestion was to download Windows Instant Mail, and I don't have any idea whether that's a good idea or not. This one is fine except for the spellcheck issue. Does anyone use the Instant Mail? Does it add on to this system or replace it?

3)The font is small on email. When I try to enlarge the font, by clicking on a higher number, nothing happens. Any ideas?
