Pond pictures - 2009

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

Today, my pond looks like this. Thriving water lily plants, growing lotus - hope this is not in trouble with its drying up leaves... reflecting the house in it with the sun shining brightly. The pond seems to have settled down because algae is not floating around but settled to the liner. We see dark water because of the background but the water is pretty clear as you can see the roots and the fish that swims around the bottom. Two days back there were four water lilies - something rare with my pond.

Water skimmers enjoy the pond giving delight to the eye with its unique skimming. They skim away on seeing us. Sharp eyesight!

Sometimes I fill the pond with water with a little hose. That's when the level dips lower by a few inches. Summer evaporation is high and so filling is more frequent. Once summer is behind, there is very less topping up needed as rains will take care of that.

Crows visit to quench summer thirst.

Rock pigeons that are residents next door do the same, but more often.

A pond is not complete without these toads. They make their presence felt!

I've posted a separate thread where some pictures of the fish are posted and so I'll not repeat here.

Hey Dinu! Great pics! What is the plant in your first pic right bottom? (seperated with some stones) Oh, and by the way; please be careful with adding water to your pond. Tapwater often has chlorine, which will kill toads, frogs, tadpoles, etc! I always have to let the water sit out (evaporate out) before adding it to my pond!

thanks for posting the nice pics dinu. is that the lily tina?

i top off with chlorinated water and even use the water that drains from the evap coolers. several years later the water features are still doing well.

Dinu. Love seeing your lovely pond and all the creatures that visit. The frog picture is wonderful!

As it looked last week.

I had allowed hyacinth to grow a lot during summer to keep water from getting too warm. Now the rains have begun. I removed half of them. I've thrown the plants on to the compost pile.

I added that circular grinding stone as a sitting bench. Removed from the far side.
