question about silkie roosters
Well, I guess what I need to know is do you want the silkie to breed your chickens to raise babies?? Other than raising babies, you don't need a rooster at all for eggs only.
My Silkie rooster Biff was quite the ladies man. But I don't think he was much of a fighter.
Yes I want fertilized eggs
the rule of thumb for fertile eggs is 1 roo per 10 hens. My silkie boys are sweet and are gentle with their girls. But putting him in with a standard roo would not be a great idea. I have 2 frizzle bantam roos in with my standard hens and other roos and they rule the roost. It's a riot. My 2 little boys keep the big cochin and brahman boys on the run.
Funny.
I have never had a more gentle rooster than my silkie. He has never, never even tried to come at anyone in the yard. His hens show no sign on wear either. His only flaw would be that when the big chickens are loose in the yard, he will pick fights with my Jersey Giant rooster. He get's the stuffing kicked out of him and still goes back for more. He has happily mated with much larger hens too.
One of my customers gave me a silkie rooster. a silkie hen and five banties. She told me the Silkie Roo used to pin her husband in the car when he came home. I had to laugh, he was so small. Don't let size fool you he turned out to be the meanest by far of any of my Roos. The girls seemed to love him buy he is a snot. I never liked him at all, He always picked fights with big ben and one day big ben had enough and tore him to shreds. No more silkie roo, but I love the hen. She is so cute. Are you sure you want a silkie mixing with the larger girls? Good luck.
Big Ben is at least firteen lbs, maybe more. He's a little hard on the girls due to his size, but he is a great Roo and I just limit his time with them.
Funny story Haystack. But it is true, don't let size fool you. We have a little Sebright roo that is a terror. So small and yet so mean.
My silkie roos would take one look at you and charge, promptly attaching themselves to your shin! Unlike the Australorp Roo we had that would run on his tiptoes behind you so that you never heard him coming at ya!
Too funny Sandy. The tiptoeing roo.
We have one that will run up behind us and when we turn around he starts pecking and clucking like he wasn't doing anything. "I was just standing here pecking"
lol! Had a goat that used to do the same thing! Not the clucking part, though.... My DB got pushed headfirst into the trunk of his car because he didn't turn around when he heard the goat coming. heehee! Sorry, kinda makes me smile considering all the nuggies he used to give me as a kid!
My silkie roos have all been gentle. They free range alongside my other roos (standard size big normal roos) and there are generally no fights. My flock seems to be relatively fight free, but I think that's partly because I have them in a large free ranging area. I have about 12 roos right now. I occasionally see a minor squabble, raised hackles, and it's usually over in a matter of 30 seconds of jumping about. There are enough hens for all. If one roo gets aggressive with a hen and she squawks too much, other roos come running and the aggressor will take off. It all works out fine.
