my basil plants
Wow those guys look great! I can never seem to get my basil from seed. Lol.
Herbie those look great! I plant my basil from seed every year, cinnamon usually but this year i am trying burns lemon basil and it's doing well
I LOVE Basil! Planted some seeds today, will do more tomorrow. Doing Parsley this year as well.
i usually plant 4 five gallon containers with large leaft basil. my wife picks them and makes peston which she thenfreezes and gives to our kidswhen they visit. she also places them in plactic zip lock bags and freezes them for later use. i love picking hem nd breaking them in pieces and puttign them on my pasta with deb's red sauce.
Basil needs light to germinate, just press seeds into the soil, and dripdripdrip water, gently.
I have tons of Lemon Basil coming up everywhere from seed from one plant I bought a few years ago. Very prolific! And taty. Not weedy at all.
Am trying Genovese basil from Stoke's seed this year, it just sprouted a couple of days ago. Supposed to be very flavorful.
My two storebought basils are going to seed now. Can I successfully save the seed, or did they need to be some heirloom variety? They look and smell wonderful. I water them just to generate smell. Really need to learn to use basil in the kitchen. Seems such a waste to have it growing and not know how to cook with it.

Gymgirl, you don't even have to cook with basil to enjoy eating it. A salad of fresh tomatoes, mozzarella and fresh basil drizzled with balsamic vinegar and oil (insalata caprese, if you're into Italian) is one of the best concoctions around!
Yes, you can save the basil seed from storebought. They will sprout and grow fine. You can also keep the plants growing by nipping the blooms off and pruning it back to make it bush out. Incidently, the seeds will cross so it is best to let one flavor seed at a time. The plants will also taste a bit bitter when flowering.
pod ~ who is growing lemon, lime, genovese and cinnamon basil.
