Clerodendrum thomsoniae

Kannapolis, NC

Is anyone in NC growing this vine? I have it planted but it's just sitting there and reading the plant files, it sounds as if once it gets established, it might be a problem. Should I take it up and put it in a pot? HELP me before it's too late!

Pyro: Thanks for the tip. Think I'll dig it up and pot it as everyone seems to think it's a thug. I don't need any more of those!

Clerodendrum thomsoniae is tropical and won't survive the winters here. The one that is cold-hardy here and becomes invasive is C. bungei.

Ahh, good to know.

But you know, those silly Mondavilla are supposed to not make it here, and both of mine came up again - one was in a large pot with no insulation, the other in the ground with 6" of mulch.

Those little bit and pieces of mini-climates in your yard and mine... funny, huh?
So it is always worth a try!

Thanks for the tips, everyone. Moretz, if mine survives (in a pot), I'll be glad to share a cutting. How's that?

pyromomma - I've experimented by leaving a C. thomsoniae in the ground over the winter here in Raleigh (very similar climate to yours) and it did not come back. So I would say it's either a summer annual here or you'd have to overwinter is as a houseplant or in the greenhouse. Growing it in a pot is a good idea because then you can take it indoors for the winter.

I have been offered C bungei but turned it down - I've seen what it can do! The flowers are pretty but it's a real thug. If you live farther south C. chinense also tends to get out of control. C. thomsoniae is a vine so I'd think the main problem you'd have with it in a tropical climate would be growing too big and taking over a trellis or supporting tree.

sounds great thxs
i have the bungei if any one wants to trade?

Columbia, SC(Zone 7b)

LOL. if you have the bungei you probably have LOTS to trade! LOL

hickory, NC(Zone 7a)

im getting there lol but i love it when it blooms and if i dont trade it then it will go in the trash heheheh

Seems like many of the clerodendrum's are thugs, but I like them...

I have C. bungei and you have to stay on top of it, but it isn't difficult to keep under control. I'm always out there weeding, so just pluck it out if it's somewhere I don't want it.

And even though I warn people it's a thug, they always want it if they see it in the yard!
