Can I prune southernwood and keep it small enough for a container ?
Southernwood
How big is your container? My tangerine southernwood is over 6 feet tall. My "regular" southernwood is about 4 feet tall.
I was thinking of adding it to a container of herbs. I've grown southernwood in the garden, and I know it gets huge. I don't think the container will work. Oh well - into the garden it goes ! It is one of my favorite aromatic plants.
I just got a book called Herbal Remedies in Pots.....Southernwood (artemisia abrotanum) is one of the herbs they use in the "Cholesterol Control" pot.
zhinusmom - How big a pot do they recommend ?
That pot doesn't seem all that big. In fact, it is just about the size I usually by.
I had a hard time finding Southernwood this year. I finally found it at www.companionplants.com
It came last week. It is healthy, but only one stem about five inches tall. I planted it in the garden. When it takes off, I will try a division in a pot. Thanks.
Since it is a woody herb you can keep it in a pot with lots of pruning, however I would suggest a barrel. That being said Southernwood has been used as an edging plant for knot gardens which leads me to believe it can be kept a lot smaller than I would ever have imagined. I would put it it the ground unless the container was big enough.
