Is it too late to start these seeds?

(Carole) Cleveland, TX(Zone 9a)

I've been so busy lately that I've put off putting some seeds in the ground.
It's highly possibly some of these should actually be sown in the fall, but please tell me what you think:

chives
blue flax
coral bells
salvia 'coral nymph'
easter egg plant
pink, white cleome
lemon mint (monarda citriodora)
creeping zinnia 'irish eyes'
amaranth
candle bush
flamingo feather
japanese red moon vine
bells of ireland
feathered poppy
lettuce leaf basil
key lime basil
pineapple mint
asiatic bulbils

and i'm fairly certain these will need to wait until fall:

coneflower (purple, white, yellow)
flowering quince
african iris (i think)
cape honeysuckle
columbine - origami (color?)

Thanks,
~ Carole

Well, I'm no expert but I believe if you were to put them (coneflowers) in the fridge for a couple of weeks, you might accidently have some luck. Zinnias, marigolds, these would be a sure bet for now. Asiatic would probably work also.

"eyes"

(Carole) Cleveland, TX(Zone 9a)

thanks, eyes... i kinda already knew the answer and could kick myself for taking so long to get this stuff in the ground. i kept thinking 'well right after the swap i'll do it.' thinking that i really wanted to place the PLANTS i was getting first and THEN put in the seeds to start so as not to disturb them.

think i might take a chance with these:

chives
blue flax
coral bells
easter egg plant
creeping zinnia 'irish eyes'
amaranth
candle bush
japanese red moon vine

and wait to chance the rest until late fall to be on the safe side.
we can only do what we can do....

Cajun2, my dad lives in FtW & he has 3 gardens a yr!
Down hear we only have a couple of months that it is too cold to plant!!!
Save some sterifoam egg cartons & try a few. I think you will be surprised how many will come up b4 you know it!
I am very interested in you Jap red moon vine!! Must go & look that one up!! lol
Are you going to Jax RU? If so, maybe we can talk some up there about it!
:~)

Beaumont, TX(Zone 9a)

I just plants chive and garlic chive seed last week. Pack said 15 to 21 day germinations, but they were coming up in 4 days.

(Carole) Cleveland, TX(Zone 9a)

Oh ok well cool then. What about the other stuff? Some of these I can't easily replace the seeds. Guess I could always just start three of each so as to save some back, just in case.

Smockette, missed you Saturday at CS! Jax RU next weekend? If so, I dunno how I can. I'm still bloomin exhausted from last weekend! I'm STILL not even finished getting all THESE plants in!

So no, I think I'd be wise to wait until fall to go to another swap! LOL

Thanks to you too, AJ! I have renewed hope!

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

Cajun2, don't you remember me coming up to you & introducing myself? And saying TY for the offer of a ride to CSRU? I had on shorts & a MAJOR dental problem? lol
Girl, I don't have every thing in the ground either but I have to make sure I have enough chicken wire to protect them fr the deer first! lol But that is really no joke!
And besides that, Smock & I are leaving Tues morning for Indy & the 500. Don't you know I sit on ready & wait on go!!! lol
:~)

(Carole) Cleveland, TX(Zone 9a)

lol i am SO blonde sometimes!!!! yessssssssssssss NOW i do!!
when i asked Smock where you were he said you were coming but i guess i didn't catch your name on your tag and didn't want you to know i was BLIND!!! lol

HEHEHE love it - Indy 500! how cool!!! varoooooooooooooooooom!!

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

Yea, it is reallly kewl! We have been going for over 20 yrs. All roads lead to Indy in the month of May! Smock is originally fr IN.
I now have 2 God-children up there & we act like it is Christmas, BD, & all other holidays while I am there. Shop, shop, shop!
My favorite driver is sitting on the Pole. That's Indy 500 talk for first position. & I think Danika is still his teammate & she is in the 10th position or fourth row, inside. We also have tickets for next Friday which we call 'Carb Day'. That is when all the pit crews compete against each other for the fastest pit crew title! lol
My packing is the weirdest part of the trip. I take 1/2 a suitcase of summer clothes & 1 & 1/2 of winter clothes. It is still cold up there @ nite.
:~)

(Carole) Cleveland, TX(Zone 9a)

Oh I remember going to Chicago in June - weirdest thing to me being from the south. Needed a COAT at night and sweated during the day. Bizarre.

Well have fun!!!

Hey, Carole, you know, I have this monstrous bed of coneflowers. I started out with two plants about 10 years ago, and somehow, it has turned into a bed of thousands. Anyway, I mention that because it's all self-sown. They start blooming right about now. Their seeds start turning brown/ready to sow anywhere from the end of June until mid-August. So, I would think that would be the best time to toss them out. But, having said that, I have them coming up just about any time except January/February. So I think you're safe sowing them any time before December. They won't bloom until next spring, of course, but they have plenty of time to germinate and get established.

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

blue flax, bells of ireland, poppies, and columbine, definitely need the fall sowing, but looks ok on the rest

and your cape honeysuckle can be moved to the now column. It doesn't need to wait until fall

Oh excellent!! Thanks so much guys!
I'm definitely getting some sowing done this weekend!

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

C2, you need to plant all you can!!!
This is not your normal growing season that you are use to!
We are almost a different country when it comes to growwing!!!
:~)

(Carole) Cleveland, TX(Zone 9a)

excellent! will do!!!

thanks all!

Seedpicker, re: the fall sowing of poppies. I was told when I purchased my peony type poppies, that when the seed heads dried and "rattled," to "shake them around" where I wanted the poppies, and that's worked for me so far. I have about 12 packages of poppy seeds I was going to offer anyone who wanted them, are you saying not to put them out now?

I'd say do what works :0)

Fall is just what I was told, but I'm sure now would be good, too. Just anytime before the winter, instead of after the winter, I guess...

Once I put the seeds out early, though, and noticed ants carrying them off. It was after I told someone about that, and how hundreds of poppy seeds had disappeared to ants, that they told me about what a high energy source they were.

The ants were carrying them off to store for winter, lol...

...guess the energy boost is why they put them on morning bagels :0)

(Lynn) Paris, TX(Zone 7b)

Hmm, I'm surprised I haven't had a problem then, because we sure have plenty of ants.

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Well, I may have just sent up too many red flags, lol...I had gone to the dollar store and purchase $5 worth of poppy seeds from the spice section. That must have been billions of seeds, and maybe that just drew too much attention, lol...

Maybe a little less, and they won't appear in droves, lol

(Lynn) Paris, TX(Zone 7b)

The ones I collected are much smaller than the ones from the store. Dmail me if you want some and I'll send you a pack.

(Carole) Cleveland, TX(Zone 9a)

Irwells, I'd love some of you poppy seeds. Is there anything on my list you'd like?

(Lynn) Paris, TX(Zone 7b)

I'd really like some of the Gaillardia x grandiflora 'Goblin'. Dmail me your address and I'll send you the poppy seeds.

(Carole) Cleveland, TX(Zone 9a)

you've got mail
