Need duck advice

Richmond, TX

My daughter wants to raise up some baby ducks and needs to know which (if any) of these breeds can fly: Khaki Campbell, Magpie, Buff Ducks, or Swedish. We were hoping to end up with some that could evade predators as the last group of Pekins vanished. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't know--but I am sure others do. I'll just bump it and see who answers:0)

My Khakis would fly over my head and out the door of their pen! But it wasn't a long distance.
I used to have call ducks and they would fly over to my uncle's pond but a FisherCat ate them one night. Tore plywood off the bottom of the coop and killed everyone.

I am not sure which are better at avoiding being eaten.
My kids would like to get ducks as well. We just dont have the area for them. They need water and we have no pond or anything for them. Good luck. And when you do get them I want pictures. ;)

I know for certain Mallards can fly because everytime my back area floods they move on in for a few weeks.

Mallards are great fliers, but most domestics have been bred for larger breasts and smaller wings. Call ducks seem to do a pretty good job of flight and muscovys are great fliers, but not real attractive. Ducks are just not real good at avoiding preditors. The "sitting duck" saying has a ring of truth.

By the way, you don't need a pond for ducks. Mine actually prefer the plastic kiddy pool to the pond.

Thanks, duckmother.
