Vriesea fosteriana

Oak Hill, FL(Zone 9b)

Hi all, I've got this Vriesea fosteriana, and I had it in filtered light, but the leaves started to curl, so I moved it to very bright in-direct light, every morning when I come out, it's all straightened out like nothing ever happened, then a few hours later, soon as the temp. raises it's all curled up again, it gets misted six or eight times a day, with well water, which is all but a little Calcium, from being spring water, I do save rain water, and use that to mist them, and recently purchased two gallons of spring water, just for misting, so tell me what this Vriesea needs because I don't seem to have any problems with the Neoregelia, Ed

I think you have a V. fenestralis or hybrid of there Ed. V. fenestralis has slightly curly leaves, so it might be it's natural form. I've never heard anyone discuss the problem before, so I am at a loss, considering you already water it frequently. Maybe it needs a potting mix with more water holding capabilities.

Thanks Sue, I looked at the photos when I did a search, and it looks just like a V. fenestralis, wow two foot leaves, that would make it nearly four feet across when mature, that's a big Brome, Ed

There is a small clone of fenestralis which looks very much like your picture. It will bloom at a very reasonable size (unlike the "normal" one which is huge.)

Mine must be the small clone. It is about 40cm tall and has flowered. I got 3 pups off it, and there is another on the way.

I thought I might as well add a picture

I love the reverse on yours, Edric.

it's all straightend out when it's raining, wish I knew why it does that, when the sun comes out, oh well, thanks everyone, Ed

Well, I think I'd like it if mine curled! It must be a humidity thing.

I decided to get a photo of it in the morning, when it's all straightend out, Ed

Lovely Ed. I saw a pic of a group of three in a book (The book of bromeliads and Hawaiian tropical plants, by Parkhurst) and they looked great with the curly leaves. i wish i could get mine to do it! Must be too humid here.
Sue
