Question about plating lillies next to the run.

Bridgewater, ME

I have some transplanting to do and I would like to plant lillies next to the run,is it toxic to them if they eat them?

green --there's a link under the first post on the reference thread. Foods Toxic to Chickens --I'd try reading through that...

Apparently lilies are highly toxic to cats. Some sites say all parts of everything in the lily family are toxic period--but that doesn't make sense since that would include onions, garlic and leeks.

This ASPCA site says that lilies are uniquely toxic to cats, suggesting that they are not toxic to other species:

Are these oriental lilies or daylilies?

Good point, gallesfarm. My chickens have eaten all my daylilies--and THEY aren't bothered at all:0(

Day lilies

Daylilies are fine. You can even eat them if you want to. :-) You can cook the buds like green beans, and some people make fritters out of the flowers. I'd rather just look at them. :)

Oriental lilies OTOH are toxic, although I don't know if they are toxic to chickens.

my ducks, geese and peacocks eat my cana lilies...no problems except my twisting an ankle trying to shoo them away...virginia

I hate it when that happens virginbred! LOL
I usually just fall into the holes left behind from the eating stuff like that. ;)

It certainly hasn't hurt my chickens and they scarf them down on a daily basis. They seem rather fond of my iris too.

Mine left the irises alone the fisrt year...now they are just jagged stumps.
