Fertilizing Corn

Brownsboro, AL(Zone 7a)

I've planted three long rows of Silver Queen recently as I had to wait for the many rains to conclude for the most part. They are starting to come up now and I have a question about fertilizing. I as using 13-13-13 and plan to use it as a side dressing. When do I first apply it and with what frequency?

I sidedress at first cultivation and again when I lay it by.

Farmerdill,

Could you please define first cultivation and lay it by.

Thanks for your help.

Jeff; I am traditional. I plant and cultivate the old time way. Once the corn emerges and gets a couple of inches high. I cultivate shallow and slow idling the tractor in the lowest gear. I have the ferilizer distributor on the tractor set at 200 lbs per acre. I normaly cultivate again the corn is a foot or more high. (As soon as weeds appear ago and that depends somewhat on rainfall as I don't irrigate). I lay by ( last cultivation) when the corn is around 2 feet high ( Before the corn gets too tall to pass under the tractor) at that time I set the fertilizer distributor at 150 lbs per acre. At that point it is on its own till harvest.

I tried growing corn once. Mommy squirrel showed her babies the lovely ears. I never did get any corn (giggle)
