I'm already a rose/daylily/clematis addict, so I'm getting ready to start on brugs and need your guidance. I had one unnamed single apricot yellow that did beautifully for me in my former home, but I want to make certain I have the best chance for success with the new garden.
I live in Central Texas and have one in-ground and one huge pot spot ready to go - color doesn't matter, but the ability to withstand high heat does. The spots will receive limited morning sun and shade in the afternoons, and they are easily reached for daily watering.
Which two varieties would you recommend to "hook" a newcomer? Where would you suggest I order these beauties from?
I sincerely appreciate any recommendations and I really thank you for taking the time to help us novice brug-admirers. Anne
I need one more addiction - please help me get started here
Hi-- welcome to the land of ''just 1 maybe 2 more brugs''. LOL There is a post on here from Mjsponies from 10:45 this morning that has a link that could help. It has a list of heat tolerant, bloom reports etc. I printed it --now my wish list looks like Santa's. Hope this helps-- Liz
What a fabulous list - thank you for pointing me to it. I think I'll be up a little late tonight....
I live fairly near you and have some potted up for a swap that was canceled. D-mail me and I'll give you a few to "experiment" with.......
You DEFINITELY have D-Mail!
The ones I like are Dr, Suess for the sweet blooms, Kong for the Huge Flushes, Creamsickle for the eye candy. Brandy
Welcome to this truly addictive plant... hang on to your hat! This is going to be fun.. hey everyone... We have another one! My Mountain Magic has tolerated the incredible heat here ... even mid day blaring sun.
I have never heard of Kong.. what color is it? Any pictures? I sturggle to grow them in my dry heat but every bloom is a reward. I have been trying to find cuttings of a Dr. Seuss for a year. I am hoping to grow something large enough this year to trade for some this fall.
I have found a nursery nearby, only 14 miles away, that I feel so STUPID I did not know was here.. been here since 1992! Been talking to the owner and he is going to let me put one of my growing cuttings in one of his greenhouses to see how it grows... I can't believe how beautifully he grows things.
LhasaLover i have a Dr.Suess (just paid 'discover' for it) LOL. If it does well maybe i can share by this fall. I just ordered $50 plus in brugs today from EBay-- i need an intervention. Liz
My father was just here, saw me potting up a brug.. said "another brug .. how many do you have?" I answered "more than I should have, not as many as I want." If I was employed right now I would definitely have more. I was lucky some of my cuttings I bought and received for postage last fall survived my flu this year and some of my poor stunted ones from last year made it through the winter in my atrium. I did lose both of the ones I had in the ground and all the cuttings I took from them and also two of my larger potted ones. I have never had one get large enough to take cuttings that could be mailed to share.. they were always very small soft tip green cuttings. I am doing everything imaginable to give them a better chance to grow this year. Now if the weather and insects would cooperate!
By the way... larger potted brug for me means about 2 ft tall! My tallest brug ever is now about 5ft and that includes the pot it is in and includes the great growth it has done so far this year... It is my versicolor peach I received as a cutting fall 2007 .. it has never bloomed but did get 3 buds this spring which were blown off. I recently repotted her in one of those big rope handled buckets.. the largest thing I could find.... GROW BABY GROW!
I wanted to take a moment to extend a very heartfelt THANK YOU to BigBubbles - NOT for the plants since she assures me that thanking her for them will doom them to failure - but for the very pleasant time spent in her beautiful garden this morning. I have never enjoyed a garden walk quite so much - everything was lovely and so is she.
The next time she offers anyone a couple of plants, though, you might want to bring a truck. BB, you are as generous as you are lovely, and I thoroughly enjoyed meeting you and touring your backyard paradise.
Gratefully, Anne
Awww, shucks Anne....that's so nice of you. I think one of the best rewards for all the hard work and time we put into our gardens is having someone else truly enjoy them. I'm so glad you came. Next time you come, the garden will be perfectly manicured and trimmed, and my house will be spic and span, and I'll have make-up on and... oh, I guess I'm just day dreaming.....
Please come back to visit anytime....Sandi
