Aloe rubroviolacea

Here is psuedo and rubroviolacea flowering together. I am crossing the pollens on these two flowering closely related plants. Hope to select the best of both plants from offspring.

I've had this clone of rubroviolacaea for over 20 years - and have quite a few instances of it around the gardens. (I've gifted a lot of it too). Its the only one near a psuedorub and for the first time this year in mid-Spring (on the warming side of the calendar). I'm assuming it normally flower in the Southern Hemisphere in their mid-Spring.

I've pollinated it dozens of times over the years and though its has borne fruit - they had no chance to mature in the wetness and coolness of winter. Maybe this time it will bear good fruit. I'm mixing it with everything flowering this time of year. Africana, camperi, psuedo, and a couple of other more obscure shrub aloes.

You have any porphyrostachys? They are flowering now, too. My Aloe rubroviolacea bloomed over 2 months ago... how is yours so late? Is it in a shady spot? Actually, mine is in a mostly shady spot in winter, so that probably wouldn't matter. I did see one at the Huntington today that had a flower remnant on it, but most of theirs bloomed in Feb and March, too.

our porphyrostachys aren't mature enough yet for flowering

I've no recollection of rubro ever flowering here this time of year. It is flowering almost exactly 6-months from the time it usually begins budding in mid-November. So this one has switched to Norhtern Hemisphere mid-Spring this year. This cutting from the main stem is the only one flowering with over ten other cuts around the gardens. The last few years rubro has flowered on a couple of cuts in mid-summer. I think fertilizer/water may be a contributing factor. The flowering plant was watered with fertilizer about 6 weeks ago, the other mature cuttings were not.
