Two Questions on starting plants indoors -

Beaver, WV(Zone 5b)

1) What causes yellowing of leaves in young plants?

2) How do you harden off plants when you have 3 weeks of rain? ( I do not have a cold frame yet. Not sure one would help at this point in the season. I am in region 5 growing season is May 21 to Sept. 21)

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

To much water or needs more food but probably water.

Put them under the overhang of your house or out building close to the foundation wher the rain can't hit.

I agree with eweed - although the wrong pH can cause yellow leaves because the plants cannot take up nutrients. If you are using regular potting soil that has not been recycled, pH should not be a problem because it's usually "buffered"

As to the rain - maybe you have a covered porch or patio where the plants can get direct sunlight some time of the day. My covered patio gets late afternoon sun and I set plants there before moving them into the garden. I also start cuttings, dry my beans, cure my onions/garlic - infact we do anything but sit out there. What gardener can "sit" when there's a weed somewhere that needs "plucking!"
