Hi Everyone,
We rescued a kittne back in November who showed up at our doorstep the week before Thanksgiving. He was close to starvationa nd 3 lbs under weight. We got him all his shots and he is now a beautiful healthy 9 month old kitty. We intended on keeping him but our dog wants to kill him and after a great deal of expense and patience this situation is not getting any better, we invested in a crate to put the dog in hoping that he would get use to the kitty when we bring him out of his room, but Baxter has tunnel vision. We are trying to find a shelter to surrender the cat to that will not kill him and that we do not have to pay any more money to. Most that I found online are in other parts of the state and they want hundreds of $ if you surrender a cat. Don & I are both out of work and cannot afford to pay any more for this cat. We need to find a home for this kitty, he is very pretty, lovable and healthy.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Susan

Have you tried SafeHaven near/in Raleigh? Look them up on line. Also not sure where you are located...Don't know what their rules are on taking in cats...Other option (but you have to be very, very careful)--put him up for adoption on Craigslist. Charge a large enough adoption fee that you will be absolutely certain he is going to folks that have the desire and means to take care of him (not a pit bull ring, lab etc), and ask for and verify references, including a veterinarian (who most likely won't lie!). Good luck--he looks beautiful.
Edited to say here is a list of all the shelters/animal rescue groups in/near your zip code from Petfinders.com

Thank you, this was helpful, I have contacted a couple of the orgs listed and hopefully we can find him a home.
Susan
You can always bring him down to my house! I've yet to meet a cat I haven't loved...and I have 11....live in the country with plenty of mice to chase :)~
Hi Susan,
I saw your title: OT: Looking for Cat Rescue Group and was intrigued, as I am an OT (occupational therapist) and have rescued 13 cats since our move to NC! Some type of coded message? ;-)
I am happy to read that rednyr can take him. He's a VERY handsome kitty!
Deb
Hi Red,
he couldn't live outside. but I appreciate it. He needs to be an inside cat.
susan totally understandable...I have a few that are in as much as out - but most of the crew likes all the squirrels and other nature teasers outside and actually don't like to come inside...I guess it's scarier to be in then out for them :)~
I was going to say that's a nice looking cat but I'm not a fan of indoor cats. Cats should be running around outside doing what they do.
Well, actually, so long as they are happy inside, have lots of toys and attention, they are much safer and healthier indoors. No big dogs, coyotes, cat fights, Feline Leukemia/FIA, parasites, cars etc. If they pine for the outdoors, though, I let them out for brief periods, so long as there are no predators or easy prey about. Funny how cats are both prey and predator, huh?!!
Hmmmmmm kind of what I have in mind for cats. Rat and snake killers.
I found a home for Smoky. Thank you all
Yea! I hope he loves his new home! Thats great news Susan

I'm so glad to hear you found a home for Smoky. We have 3 cats, 2 of whom adopted us when they showed up half-starved. What could we do but feed them and take them in? Rosie adopted me when I was living/working in Asheville. She wants to be queen of a world which has no other cats in it. She hates all other cats and thinks she is a person. Lucky is just a comedian, sort of like Dom Deluise: overweight, funny and endearing. Castor, the senior resident cat and survivor of twins (Castor and Pollux), just wonders why we needed anyone besides him. He tolerates Lucky and they play sometimes, but Rosie and Castor stalk each other daily.
Life with cats is never dull!
Thank you Hemo, I am glad he got a home. I told Don my hubby, do not bring any more cats in the house. I had no idea Baxter our dog, would hate cats so much.
I like cats but more pets at this time is just too burdensome financially.
just saw this = I was at AIS nationals in Kansas City. am just now getting back into things. Smokey looks so much like our former cat, Juliet that its spooky. Glad you found him a home, though, as I don't know but what he'd run into the same issue at my house. Hope thinks cats are something to chase. However, I could really use a mouser.....
So glad you found a good Indoor home for this lovely cat.
I aplaud you for your determination in locating an indoor only home. I was going to offer.
BTW for those outdoor cat enthusiasts - Cats do Not need to be outside and are the #1 killer of songbirds.
I can understand the need for barn cats (neutered & spayed of course) to help in mouse control, but otherwise they are in much greater danger outside than in.
