I had one like that in my last hatch. It was caused from it taking too long to get out of the egg. I had to keep it seperated from the others for a day and night. I put it in a gallon icecream tub in the brooder. It got stronger and by the next day it was only affected in one toe so I put it back in with the rest. In a day or 2 it was completely fine and you couldn't tell it from the rest. Hope yours does as well.

She was born the 6th and I just noticed it.

On mine, you could tell right away. It's whole foot turned under at first but it was only 1 foot. Do you think it has been that way or just got that way?

I have a couple of adults like that - they run as fast as any other chicken. When they are young, you can make a bootie out of pipe cleaners or use duct tape and cardboard to make a shoe, and straighten everything out, although it doesn't always work, and if it's not severe, I tend to leave them be.

I think Grownut put links to the foot bootie things in the sticky link thread at the top of the P&L forum.

I had a Spitz that was like that but more severe.. it was fine.. I didn't worry about it either..

Breeders say not to use them to breed from--but from everything I've read on this forum over the last three years, the individual birds aren't bothered by it. I think it can be due to heredity and/or incubation conditions--some breeders claim that keeping the chicks in the incubator on a wire floor with high humidity for 24 hours after hatching helps prevent it.

Thanks for the info

I have a few with toes that are crooked. Believe it or not it got passed down to their chicks as well. I assumed it was genetic. They are no worse for it though. They run with the pack and sometimes lead it. :)

Crooked toes on babies is usually caused by a vitamin B deficiency. You can give them brewers yeast to help. Just put it in the food. We had one hatch that way a month or so ago. I put a little brewers yeast in the feed and in a few days it straightened out. Now you can't tell at all.

Where do you buy brewer's yeast?

Denton, TX(Zone 7a)

From a brewery! (sorry couldn't resist!)

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

No breweries here. Guess I'll have to have chickens with crooked toes. Oh well, gives them character. LOL

We can buy brewers yeast tablets at Walmart here.. give it to the cats & dogs to cut down on pet dander & something else I can't remember. comes in tablets.. we just crush them up & put them in their food. :)

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

Is it in the pharmacy department?

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

At ours.. sorta yes.. its with the vitamins & such which is close by the pharmacy. I saw it once at the grocery store too in the vitamin section too so anywhere that has a decent sized vitamin section might have it.. even a pet store should have it.

Thanks a mil. I'll check into it.

Its at my walmart in the pet section, its for dogs to keep away flea and other bugs, its a tablet and you give it hole to dogs ,I supose you could crush it up to the chickens, would you put it in ther crumble?

You can also get brewers yeast at most health food stores. Gets a bit pricey there though.
