Hi Caramel, Bluebirds favorite food that comes from you is Mealworms. Here is a page on them.

They can be bought from Pet and Bird stores but if you want a larger amount there is a link on that page of mail order Mealworm Suppliers right below the pic on the left with the coin in it.

Hope this helps. Pelle :-)

If you are seeing them already and want them to stay, especially throughout the off season, the correct answer is mealworms. But Eastern bluebirds, in the first place, are attracted to open areas, and a well placed nest box a safe distance away from heavilly wooded areas or brush and without too much activity from other birds. They are also attracted to water, especially moving water, such as in a fountain, but a nice shallow bird bath will usually work too, if you keep it filled.

They are insect feeders and rarely will be found around seed feeders. Their typical method of hunting is to perch on a tree branch or fence and drop down to pick off an insect. Their preferred insects are catapillars, grasshoppers, crickets and spiders. They do not like earth worms. When necessary and in colder weather they may also feed on berries, including holly berries and poke berries. And of course, they will eat snow when the the water supply is frozen.

I feed more mealworms in the winter because berries are in short supply hereabouts and I like to see them every day. In colder areas they migrate but often they do not migrate far, often just to where they find shelter, water and food.
