I am still at a loss here... hesheit should either be laying or crowing by now.. Chuckie was hatched in November!
Is Chuckie a girl or boy?
I guess those pics aren't close enough.. oh well.. it's something to look at till I can get more..:)
Hi there ZZ's!! Chuckie is definitley a girl, no doubt about it. If she was born in November, theres no question he'd be crowing by now. However if he's a she i'd bet she'll be laying later this month. And theres no charge for my service.LOL Hay
Gotta love me.
I'm lean'in toward girl too, ZZ. The difficulty has been that Chucky's crest doesn't mushroom out like most Silkie pullets, but it doesn't blow back like a roo, either. I wonder if that is because Chucky looks like hesheit is a bantam?
Thankz Haystack! I just can't wait for Chuckie to lay! Why? I don't know.. I guess it's just to convince me? LOL
Yes, Chuckie is a bantam.. The egg was tiny.. I was holding Chuckie last night and noticed the "mullet" hairdo.. LOL That is what is throwing me off.. There are no wattles..
Chuckie has this ritual with Cody nearly every night.. Chuckie sits on Cody's lap and warms up.. they talk and talk... it's sooo cute! So last night Cody was busy with his new computer thingy..(thank you Catscan) and I was on Chuckie duty.. That lil ball of fuzz sure puts out the heat! The lil sweet sounds just about put me to sleep! LOL
ZZ's I was just about to say we could arm wrestle! If you win, it's a girl, if I win it's a boy. But before I could type it in a surge of energy threw me to the floor. Thats when I knew you were thinking the same thing, WOW!!! You sure caught me off guard. Mental telepathy must really work. Hey guy's don't mess with my friend, she'll put you down.LOL Haystack Gotta love me.
OMG Haystack!!!!!!!! You are TOOOO FUNNY! I hope you are okay.. Want me to help you up? LOL
Yeah, that's right.. I've got a mean arm... I start my own rototiller.. LOL
Have you seen my favorite commercial of all time? The one where the guy has a twitch in his arm from pulling to start the weed eater? They are advertising battery powered weedeaters, etc. The guy is helping his wife with dishes and snatches a dish and throws it across the room? Oh I can't stand how funny that is!
My first lawnmower had such a long pull chain I had to get a neighbor's help to start the stupid thing. Lean aaaalll the way over, yank aaaaalll the way back up over my head and I still couldn't get going fast enough or far enough. If I had ever made 5'2" things woulda been different though....
lol on the wraasslin', guys n gals!!

It is hard to see Chuckie's comb, but if he is a boy, it should be sort of chunky and prominent. If it's a hen, then it would be much smaller. From what I can see, I vote hen too. Chuckie is not a good girly silkie name. Chickie is much better. Or Chicklette. But she really looks like a Taffy to me.
Mox!!! I love that name. CHICKLETTE, That is just to kool, what a great name.
I'm no good at names but I have loved some of the names that I hear on the forum. I'm just not creative. Some just seem to have it all. Blah Blah Blah.
Sorry Grow!!! I could just picture you trying to pull that long cord. Maybe you should have tried running. Seriously Grow, we have a self propelled mower just like that and I roll every time my wife tries to start it. She always gives it one pull and then looks up to see if I'm watching and laughing. I can even predict what she will say if I'm looking! " I hate this thing " and thats when I start rolling. I am so sadistic. Hay
Cha-cha-cha!!
Well I made the neighbor's day allowing him to kindly assist the poor short lady..........but I was a little hard pressed to show nothing but gratitude. Felt like I ought, at 27, to be able to mow the lawn unassisted, lol.
I was wondering the same thing about my 4 week old "girls". One is almost twice as big as the other and challenged the cat the other day. She just walked up to the cat, lowered her head, and got into a staring contest with her. The cat backed down, and left the room after about a minute or two. They are New Hampshire Reds, and I knew they would be big, and grow fast, but I didn't know there would be such a difference in their size.
They are still so fascinated with the fact that I follow them around and pick up their poop. They try to show me every poop they do. It will be very nice, when we get their outside house finished, lol. They like to fly up and sit on my lap. We are getting a lot of use out of the baby wipes.
They are looking rather motley right now, kind of at the glasses and braces stage, but Mom still thinks they beautiful.
It's been a long time, but I do think that roosters crow, earlier than hens lay.
Elleisn, I was given 2 NH Red chicks and the guy swore they were pullets.. said the old woman has been raising them for 30 years.. one was bigger.. I told him it was a roo.. and finally, when there was no question.. he took it back. :) I should have bet on that one! My NH Reds were quite aggressive.. or should I say defensive? They don't start trouble.. but sure wouldn't walk away from it... The male was very protective of his lil mate.
Elle - that is so cute that they show you their mess so you can clean it up. How cute is that?! I know the stage you mean - that awkward half fluff half feather stage. Oh, they are always lovable though!
What a great looking Silkie ZZ!! I am saying girl. she has the forward hair doo. CUTE!!! None of mine are crowing either, but mine were born in Jan. So yours is a bit older. :D Congrats!!
Not much help but I had a Black Silkie Roo a few years back that never crowed till the other Roo in the yard was captured by the little red fox. After that if crowed its heart out. Only way I knew it was a Roo was that it didn't give me an egg. My neighbor also has 2 black silkie Roos.. one crows, one doesn't & neither look like Roos.
Cousin Nut I had one of those awful pull me/push me mowers too once. I would just push it back and forth across the lawn for a bit til a man would come along to figure out why it was so quiet and then start it for me. Men luv to figure things like that out (except for Haystack. Poor Mrs. Haystack).
CHUCKIE IS CROWING!!!
He grew a big huge comb in the last week or so.. and whamo.. started crowing.
Mystery Solved
Ummm. Ignore what I said at the start of this thread.
I have ALWAYS thought that Chuckie was a boy:0)
Good thing there was no charge for Haystack's services too. LOL
I had it wrong too.. Chuckie just didn't "bloom" for ever!!! I hunted for a egg for months..
Haystack must have gotten thumped on the side of the head by his DW and fell on the floor thinking he was telepathic... LOL (see above)
Wow, he sure took a long time to reveal his true nature! Congrats on your lovely roo!
Chuckie hatched in November and is just now crowing???? I don't really want to wait that long for Matilda to start crowing. Is this a bantam rooster trait? I sure hope so. Joey and Pern are both crowing already. No doubt about them.
Anyway, congrats on your "new" rooster. He is adorable.
Poor Chuckie was overshadowed by bossy hens and impudent roos. It was only when he was removed from that repressive environment that his beautiful rooish nature could reveal itself.
No, I doubt in a better situation it wouldn't take that long.. it's just that every time I tried to put Chuckie in his own place, he would do nothing but pace the fence for days and I couldn't stand to watch it.. Recently he got pecked good.. I finally got a good place to keep him, now he doesn't mind his own pen.. he is "master of his domain" :)
I have a lil lavender bantam Ameraucana that is only like 5 weeks old crowing his lil heart out..
Speaking of crowing.. my chicks have been known to crow at 3 days.. :)
I hate CHUCKIE, that no good for nothing! Kinky looking lil Roo. that acts like a boy-girl. Who would believe that lil devil bird could ruin one man's reputation. You know??? Come to think if it!! I know some people like that, it takes a while for them to reveal what they really are...Hay
Screamin funny Haystack!!!!!!!!! You are the bestest chicken sexer anyway!!!!!
Dahlianut!!! I just had a vision of you and your lawn mower. ROTFLMBO! You are good, and yes you do know men. Fortunately for me at my age I have no ego left. I don't care why your mower is so quiet. And if your happy with the grass springing up behind your mower? So am I. Your a hoot. Haystack
Meet some of my friends
TOTALLY luv the doos Haystack!
Keep the pics coming Haystack! We love em!
oo I like the chicken in the front of the pic. My Matilda is cute but not nearly that cute!
