are my overwintered ee's alive or dead??

Lindenhurst, NY

I unpacked my ee's - black beauty, hilo, and a bunch of others. I can't tell if these things are alive. They are like hard rocks and dry. I have no idea if they are alive or dead? First time trying this, anone have any ideas? I overwintered them in the basement, cut off the tops of plants and put in bag with peat moss.

thanks

They are still dormant. If your weather is not getting below freezing anymore then put them outside and let mother nature take's it course. And I will add, if your not getting any rain right now, give them a drink.

thanks Rachel. I guess I should plant them before I start watering them, right?

If your temp's are still getting below freezing then I would not plant them outside just yet. You can alway's pot them up and put them in a warm spot in your house/garage/etc, and start them out now and yes please give them a drink of water.

Hope this help's.

Maureen, my friend in Central Islip planted hers a few days ago. I dont think you need to worry about frost.

You don't need to worry unless they're mushy. As far as timing I'm way out of your zone but mine don't start to leaf out until the nights are in the 50's.

thank you all so much for your input, I really appreciate it!!

Careful with the water - too much will make the rhizomes go mushy. Just a little to get them going, then hold off until you see some growth.
