Bossy Hens

Richmond, TX

For Haystack: I posted this also on the thread that was raveling far afield, but does anyone else have trouble with bullying hens? I find that my Barred Rock hens are quite domineering, especially to the Buff Orpingtons, who don't seem to have sense enough to stay clear. They get mugged several times a day.

Porkpal, you give me hope. I have 5 chicks and not sure what sex they are at 2.5 weeks. They do push each other around a lot. I was thinking at least 4 are roos. If hens are pushy too, then some might be pullets. They are supposed to be part Wyandotte. Anyone know if Wyandotte hens are agressive?

Although some breeds are suppose to be more aggressive, I think a lot is due to individual personalities. My Buff Orpington hen is very assertive, much more so than my Barred Rock. The gentlest so far are the Faverolles....and that does makes sense since they are suppose to be prone to being bullied.

The most aggressive pullet I had was a Delaware--she kept the Orpington under control, chasing her all over the yard if she even looked at her funny. When she left, the Orpington took over the flock. The worst rooster has been a Dutch Bantam who nearly scalped a Serama rooster before I realized there was a problem. He would latch on and not let go. The Serama is still recovering his head feathers.

None of the older pullets/hens will put up with being pushed around by any of the younger birds, of any breed, whether pullets or roosters.

And I am babysitting two adolescent Shamo--real fighting game birds-- a pullet and a cockerel, who keep to themselves and give no trouble at all. Go figure.

I had Catscan's barred rock for a while and she was mean to the others.. not at her place, but she was here!
Delawares were another breed I didn't like cause of that.. I like it peaceful in my coop.

Chickens, birds Poultry, Chick, peeps, chickens. Chickens are interesting.. Chickens chickens chickens..

Howz that Haystack? Isn't that an interesting thread about chickens?

Is that muffage I see?

Poor Dorothy did not like the other chickens at ZZ's....I think they made fun of her. Here she is a perfect angel.

I wonder what would happen if the Shamo went home?

My Wyandottes are the top of the pecking order. The other breeds I have are NH Reds and Easter Eggers, and the Wyandottes definitely rule, but aren't mean.

No muffage Grow.. it's a Barnevelder.. I just threw a pic up at random.. Just for a chick pic in this thread.. I have muffage in the brooder though!

Yeah.. perfect angel... LOL

The shamo would have their own pen, cause the only other place they could go would be in with the Dutch Bantams.. I don't think that would fly.

I have a NH Red that is kind of a sassy lil thing... she better stop being like that or she will go to Sacramento.. LOL

My son took my camera to the Ren Fair. Don't know when he'll be back with it. I'll make him hold the chicks for me in payment for using the camera. LOL
