Gardeners, Cats, Dogs

Who on here likes cats?

My ex - DH, as Lin says, told me that all artists/gardeners had cats
in common. Could be true, maybe only artists (HA), I have dogs too.

But -- wrote this to turn you on to one of the funniest sites ever:
Icanhascheezburger.com (cats)
Ihasahotdog.com (dogs)

They change daily (sometimes hourly) and you can vote on them.

North Augusta, ON

I've seen those sites, they are hilarious!!

I have 7 cats, 2 dogs, a bunch of fish...and over 100 various house plants.

Three,

You sound like me. I did have a large Chinese White goose
but had to give him away. His name was Jemima (we didn't know).

I also have fish. Gold, and plants - to run us out! I gave my Auracana
hens to our vet. They lay colored eggs.

You would never believe that I live in an "upscale" (woooooo) suburban
neighborhood.

Sounds like I need 80 acres and a mule! (I would take a donkey or two
instead.)

Well, I love animals, we have four dogs (five when my sons come home from college), four cats and four birds. Nothing in particular with the number four, just happened, which is good because four is the limit by city ordinance =( . .. I guess we are not in compliance when the boys come, but their dog does not live here, just visits.
If I had a bigger place, I would definitely have more.

I have 2 dogs, 1 cat, lots of houseplants-mostly hoyas. I would probably have more animals if I had a larger place.

I have 2 senior mixed breed dogs- Mikey and Murphy, 5 cats- two of whom are sort of dog like- Lucy, Allie, Sidney, Gigi and Mylo, 2 aquatic turtles (Mississippi Map- Oscar and Eastern Painted- Felix), 4 algae eaters and 15 Goldfish.....plus lots of plants!

Kelly

Just two cats here, Lily and Lupin, and of course more house plants than most people would consider normal. There was a resident mouse when we moved in last year, but for some reason its gone...lol

Christine

Christine,
Did you check out Icanhascheezburger.com?
It is also called LOL cats.

If I laugh out loud I will give it a 5, a chuckle gets 4.
Some are killers.

OMG, that's hillarious - I've put it in my favourites. Gotta show DH, he'll love it too. Thanks for that link Alison!

Christine

My pleasure. You should look at it every day - they are always
adding to it.

I love cats and dogs, I was brought up with both. I wish I could have a cat but as I rent my house that's not possible. I wait for the day I have my own house and I can go to the rescue home and find a loving cat!

So, at the moment, just hoyas, and the odd unwanted animal - mice indoors and foxes outside.

North Augusta, ON

When I first rented my house there was a no pets rule. I had 8 of them and the landlord never once noticed...until after about 8 years, he was here with his men putting on a new tin roof and there were cats in every window watching them!! He knocked on the door, walked in a sniffed a couple of times, declared that he couldn't tell a I had any cats and left it be...LOL

I have a Yellow-Naped Amazon parrot named Coco (20 years this Sept) and she speaks Portuguese and a little English. She also cries and whines like a baby, makes the sound of water dripping into a metal bucket and all sorts of other sounds. She also creaks like the back door on my house. I worked in a pet shop part time for years. A woman whose dad was from Brazil came into the store and listened to Coco and she told me that Coco has a very filthy mouth, in Portuguese. This woman thought that Coco was probably raised near a brothel very early in life and that's where she learned to say all of the bad words. Thankfully, her filthy mouth is in Portuguese so hardly anyone knows she is swearing. Coco was tame when I purchased her.

When I first got Coco I thought it was neat that she cried. Now, after 20 years of crying and whining, I have no tolerance for babies/young children. I have to leave any situation where there is a crying/whining baby/child. At least when you have kids, they grow out of the crying/whining stage. Coco never will, unfortunately.

When I was growing up, we adopted a stray kitten that was in the neighborhood. I always wanted a dog, but my dad was raised on a farm and in his eyes, in order to have a dog, you MUST have acres and acres of land, regardless of the size of the dog. My parents bought me a parakeet instead of a dog and I've had birds ever since.

I've also had both fresh and marine aquariums at times and I have a few hundred houseplants. I have about 35 hoyas, which is nothing compared to some of the people here.

It just seems that if someone is interested in flora, they also seem to be interested in fauna. (:o)

Of the LOL cats up now "Class of '59" and "strange rules"

We have 5 cats - Gizmo, Leggo, Toby, Sunny and Sophie. Sophie is mine and the other 4 are my sister's. Mike, before I moved up to AL to take care of Mom, I had a Yellow Nape for 19 years, Barney. Also had cockatiels, a monk parrot, Goffin's cockatoo and a myriad of other exotics you acquire when working in a bird shop.
We only have 2 houseplants - a large Spath in front of the fireplace and something like a prayer plant on the table in the living room... everything else is outside or on the screened porch.

I moved from suburbia to a very rural farm about a year and half ago and have acquired quite a menagerie since that time. We have three dogs (golden retriever, flat coated retriever and Boston Terrier) three outdoor kitties who keep our property and barn free of anything that is smaller than them that moves (we get gifts every morning on our doorstep...ick) Three horses, a Neatherland Dwarf bunny, a parakeet, 15 chickens, 1 rooster and MANY cows and calves. These, in addition to about 50 hoyas and numerous other plants keeps me plenty busy. We used to have a Meyers Parrot (named Coco) who could ring like the telephone, answer the phone by saying "Hi!" and make the pinging sound our security system would make when someone came in the door. Oh, he liked to do the microwave open beep, too. He could say "I love you Coco". He loved me and hated my husband and daughter, so we gave him to a Bulgarian friend....he now speaks Bulgarian better than English. In a previous life (suburban), I used to have 20 aquariums with all sorts of fish, a cockatoo, MANY cockatiels and canaries. I used to breed and sell canaries, cockatiels and numerous types of finches....so I guess I'm a flora and fauna kind o'gal, too...

Fuquay-Varina, NC(Zone 7a)

I am a bona fide animal person. I have two cats and my roommate has two cats, but no dogs. I train horses, but I have never owned one in my life. it is ALOT cheaper to just ride the ones that the owners don't have time/ability to ride.

....and then there are the plants

(Zone 1)

Aaah, plants and pets ... both considered family members around here! ^_^ I can't imagine living without either.

We had 5 cats a couple of years ago, but are down to just two now. One of our cats lived to be 24 years old! We now have two kitties and a 150 gal marine aquarium in the family, although I don't consider the fish pets (can't pet them or play with them. You can talk to them but they don't talk back, LOL.) At one time we had 3 dogs, 2 cats, 2 birds and 2 fish tanks full of fish. We look forward to some day adopting another canine but for now it's the 2 older kitties and lots and lots and lots of plants!

Lin, check this out for your fish if you don't
think they are pets....an acquaintence of mine from CR
came up with it - you will LOVE the website of 'trained' fish:

Barb,
Did your yellow nape like anyone except you? Coco only likes me. She HATES my friend Lynne. I can't even take Coco out when Lynne is around because Coco will bite me.

I think it is quite normal for Yellow napes and Mexican Double yellow headed parrots to be one-person birds. I do take care of a yellow nape for a lady I met when I worked at the pet shop. Gatsby loves me almost as much as her owner, which is kinda weird. This lady told me that I'm in her will since Gatsby loves me so much. Gatsby hates her husband. The one thing Gatsby does that I just love, is that when you leave her room or any room that she is in, she will say: "goodbye, see ya later", without fail. I live alone and when I took care of Gatsby earlier this year, after she went back home, I missed having someone say goodbye to me all the time. (:o) Silly, but true.

(Zone 1)

We had an Indian Ring Neck Parrot years ago. He was my husband's bird and was definitely a one person bird. He didn't talk much, only thing he ever learned to say was "Hello" and "Pretty Bird" and he did a wolf whistle. He hated me and would bite me every chance he got! He never wanted to be in his cage and required a lot of attention. Even though I was home all day with him when my husband was at work, I tried to be nice and let him out and pay attention to him, but he would still bite me! Yet, if I didn't let him out of his cage he would screech (very loudly) for hours! We ended up giving him to a lady who raised different kinds of birds. She had a female Indian Ring Neck that needed a mate. She thought our "Sandy" was a bit too old to breed but she still wanted to adopt him as a pet. She said she would slowly get the two acclimated to each other over a few days/weeks. Well, within a couple of days they were bonded! They ended up producing a few clutches of babies together! He was a happy camper Parrot after he found his mate.

Speaking of birds with vocabulary ... My husband came home from a pet shop about 30 years ago and told me about a bird there that belonged to a friend of the owner. He was pet sitting while his friend was out of town. I don't remember what kind of bird it was but my husband said it was in a cage just inside the front door and would whistle the theme from the Andy Griffith show, and then it would start hollering "Help, Let me Out of Here!" "Help, Let Me Out of Here!"

Huntsville, AL(Zone 7a)

Lol, Mike, looks like you are in line for another sidekick when Gatsby's human is no more. Wonder what Coco will have to say about that! Barney was bonded to me and only me. He would imitate my husband and the boys but no one could handle him but me. He was never in a cage, either, until he entered sexual maturity and started chewing up the furniture. He had a stand where he would hold "court". Leaving him behind was like giving up one of my kids, but Mom hated (read "was afraid of") birds and Barney went to a police officer who bred exotics, so his needs were met on another level. He is still healthy and happy some ten years later. My Goffin's, Jake, hated my ex and he made me get rid of the bird. Too bad, too, because I got rid of the ex not too long afterward! ;)
