land snails as pets?

Has anyone had or can you have a land snail as a pet?
My son found one around a month ago. It's been in a glass vase with a cover. I thought it was dead but sprinkled water on it and in vase. Next thing I know it's back again. I put some more grass and soil in there.
I don't want to kill it but it would be neat for my boys to watch.
