Hello! I've just found this terrific gardening site this past week, and already need to thank several people here who have helped me out, or have contacted me re: plant trades.
Thank you's go out to:
Sis, Tessy, Nagpie1, Azalea, Midwestsnowbird, Ruby42, and Crasulady2 for helping me learn-the-ropes here at Dave's!
While I haven't got the entire site (or procedures) figured out yet, I'm getting there...slow but sure.
I garden in mid-Michigan, Zone 5, on the small family farm where I grew up. My husband and I grow veggies, and have a small orchard, and I have many perennials and a few roses.
My biggest challenge gardening here is our site.
We're on a windy, sandy, hill. I'm finding that Sedums seem to hold-their-own best here, and that "wildlife dining"
is indeed a challenge! The deer love my rose buds and hosta.
Woodchuck frequently dig their holes either in my flowerbeds, or so close to our home's foundation, that they disconnect our phone line! Ah well...
I look forward to meeting everyone here.
What a wonderful site this is!
Sincerely,
Oscarsdotter
I too, am a "newbie" to this wonderful site!
Welcome to DG, Oscarsdotter! Sounds like gardening is a bit of a challenge in your neck of the woods :) Take heart, many of us feel as though we are setting out a buffet for the critters each time we plant something! (If you want to know how my sweet corn did this year, ask the raccoons :o( Ah, well - next year perhaps.....) We're glad to have you at DG!
Welcome to Dave's Garden Oscarsdotter and so glad you found us.Your place sounds wonderful, unlike you, here on the prairie,no hills, lol, but everything else you mentioned'It is a true challenge,to say the least'What I like most here is the patience and help so many give, including the wealth of knowledge and expertise' We even have a Master Gardener Forum that is unsurpassed with their help and guidance' So many volunteers too that are building Dave's Garden, many hours, for our Plant Databases,Searches,Latin referencing,on and on. If you need anything, just ask, don't be shy and there is no dumb questions, just mine, lol,no really,we're all learning and that's what makes Dave's Garden(Trish's too) so fulfilling(sp)don't have spellcheck, lol'See ya 'round the garden gate, Sis'
welcome from another michigander!!!! how close are you to me? i know of 3 bay city gardeners here at daves.
have fun here
dori
Thanks to all for making me feel so welcome here.
For Dori, aka: "notmartha": I'm located about 12 miles southeast of Lansing/E.Lansing/MSU area.
My husband and I have talked of visiting the Bay City area. Believe it or not, I've never been on that side of the state before! In our travels to see family and friends, we usually cover just about every other part of the state, but we've never been to the Bay City area.
We may have to change that! :-)
Take care,
Oscarsdotter

It's a small world, for sure!
Sometime when you're in my neck-of-the-woods,
stop by for a visit! Bring Dori, too! :-)
Oscarsdotter

Who know one of these days I / we might show up on your doorstep :O I have gardened vegies all my life but an very new to the flower side of gardening. I am working on the design for a new "sunny" bed I hope to cut out next spring. See ya around.
