Free mulch

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

We get free mulch from our township. Last year I spread it around and I think it was filled with weed seeds. Can I treat it somehow before spreading in my gardens?

ohh - thats scary. When I germinate seeds - well in trays there can always be a left over or 2 or 3 that did not germinate. I take the tray and cover it and set it out in the sun and bake the living life out of it. It basically will fry the leftover seeds.

I dont know what to tell you with mulch..............

I have cleaned small patches(4x8) of the garden by covering it with clear plastic in late july and august, between crops (early corn and cabbages). it cooks the soil and everything in it.. nothing comes back. as far as quick fix.. i am not sure what would kill a seed.. but perhaps mixing with roundup . i think roundup breaks down quick. may be safe to use after a few weeks..

I thorow preen on the mulch surrounding my rose garden where the nearby cherry wood trees would always start new seedlings. It seems to be working.

Hope this helps
