African Violet ID help needed, please

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

bought this today, but no tag...any thoughts?

It is a double white with alternating ruffled purple edges and ruffled green edges...sorry these blooms are a bit aged, but that is all I have to take a picture of...

Going to take someone a lot smarter than me to know. I have First Class and there are more than 15,000 registered avs.

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

I'm just hoping for some kind of close guess...i realize it is a longshot...can't believe these grower can't just stick a little name tag in there :0(

South, TX

It is so pretty, love those leaves. I hope it will ring a bell for someone.

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks, Sally :0)

I can start some for you, if you like?

Thanks, Jim...

Yep, I knew it didn't have a name when I bought it, but liked it enough to buy it, anyway :0)

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

It is pretty! Can you get a better shot of the tag? I know it doesn't have the name on it, but if the nursery that it came from is on there, it could narrow down the possibilities.

There is a standard size AV plant a friend of my mothers gave me last night. All I have to go on that one is that she got it at a hospital gift shop in Austin last year. It is supposed to have purple "lacy" (her words, not mine!) blooms. Will need to wait for it to bloom first, before an ID can be attempted.

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Syrumani-
thanks for trying to help, but the only tag was just one of those generic tags. I quized the lady that owns the nursery where I bought it, and she said it came from a grower that doesn't even always sell all their own stuff...sometimes liners that they grow on up...

She said there was just no way to find the name, if they didn't put it in there :0( She even pulled out the invoice from that company and all it said on there, was "assorted saintpaulia" 4"

I really try to buy only named, but every now and then there will be a really pretty one that makes it to my basket, because I just like it ;0)

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Nothing wrong with that, seedpicker. Grow it and enjoy it.

Reminds me of one I had awhile back called 'Mint Condition'. The photo at the AVSA site isn't very good: http://www.avsa.org/Photographs/MintConditionLrg.jpg#http://../Photographs/MintConditionLrg.jpg%23

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

hm...well I guess I can watch it and see. thanks :0)

I actually got a plant of mint condition recently, but it hasn't bloomed, yet. I will watch them both, and compare :0)

It is quite possible that these blooms are distorted...they are very old and I've already snipped them off.

The good news is that there are several more about to open up, so maybe I can get a much better picture of what they are supposed to look like, soon.

I sure have a thing for the doubles with green edges...seems I pick those every single time! :0)

Hi Taylor ,

I think your plant is Spearmint , my plant is mature so the leaves aren't as shinny as your's but it has the same shape and color leaves and the flowers look the same , I have some pics of mine but don't know how to post them as this is just my third posting and I haven't had the time to try and find everything out about this site , I would look at some pics of Spearmint at the av site , I hope this helps :) it gets to be a big gorgeous white , purple and green flowered beauty , you will love it more as it gets older :) enjoy your new treasure .

hi connie, your almost my neighbor,i live in north dakota

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

well it does look like spearmint, and also looks like this picture of Ma' Ching Dynasty, although neither mine, or this picture fit the description, but the yellow flecking could be hard to notice, if the bloom is old.

It will be interesting to see when more open.

Thanks for the help! :0)

That pic is not a great representation of Ma's Ching Dynasy--I've had that one and it is not the one you have. Have you looked at the Harmony's yet? That's what came to mind when I first saw your pic---just a shot in the dark...

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Where is "the av site"...?

I googled these for images, but just not coming up with much, ...maybe three pictures if I'm lucky...

I have Harmony's pinkstone and Harmony's frilly dealy, and I guess I'm attracted to the double frilled ones, but don't remember a white/purple/green one...

But I'll check it out. Thank you!

Hi All ,

Hi Bigoldbuck me waving hi to a close neighbor , hope it is warming up there , getting gorgeous here but could snow any minute :)

Taylor , I do think you have Spearmint and I know it isn't Ma's Ching Dynasty , I have that one and it has a distinct blue border edge with some yellow over white in the petal center so unless the flowers you showed are just really faded I don't believe it is Ma's . Growing conditions make flowers look sooooooo different , I look at the listings on ebay and see plants that I have that are marked correctly but are so different from the pics of supposedly the same plant , but as you said you have buds coming and so the story of your new darling will be exposed in the loveliest of ways , yummy flowers to stare and smile at :)

I am so pleased to meet you all and love it that you all come to the aid of your fellows , it will be a pleasure getting to know all of you and drain your brains of info and hope you do the same to me : ) I have so many questions and observations to discuss with all of you but time is calling me to leave now but I will surely be back in a soontime , have an eye appointment so must run , I wish you all a lovely warm day , talk to you all later , hugs Connie Lynn

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Connie-hope your eye appt. goes well

So far, spearmint is the closest match. Some pictures aren't as frilled or edges not as ruffly, but closer than any others I've looked at...time will tell.

The one bud that was about to open turned brown and hung its head(probably from repotting it down), but there are a few more flower stalks on it with tiny buds, so hopefully the rest will continue on for me

Thanks, again

Maybe it's just me,but I think seedpicker's plant is a full double.

Hi Gail ,

I wanted to thank you for the lovely plants , they arrived fine , Franken's Dainty Lady had a broken leaf but it will be a mother soon so all worked fine , you sent such big wonderful plants , thank you so much , I will leave you feedback on ebay but wanted to just let you know they are fine and thank you here too , I think the wrapping with tissue is fine and is cheaper than the zip bags .

Thank you so much Gail , many hugs ,

Connie Lynn

Lynn ,

I think you are right , Taylor's flowers do look like full doubles but the pics that Gail posted aren't as colorfull as mine either , my flowers have much more bright green , not just a pale touch but a bolder green , that is why it is one of my favorites , like Kei - Yoki , the green is so bright so maybe Taylor's plant is still a mystery , maybe it is a cross of Spearmint , beats me but if I see something else that looks like it I will post again too , the eye appointment went fine , my eyes seem to get better as I get older , don't need toric lenses now and better is always good when it comes to body things :) Hope you all had a nice Thursday : )

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Nice to meet you Connie Lynn. ^_^.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Connie, I don't think I am going to send out any more big plants..........it is just too hard not to get a broken leaf..........when they are too big. So I am going to concentrate on sending out nice big starter plants and not make nice buyers like you have to put up with a broken leaf..............
Thanks for being so nice about it
gail

Monticello, MN

Gail ,

No it is fine , the plants are so lovely and I like big plants , I don't have to baby them so much and worry about them dieing , the broken leaf is no problem at all , your plants are gorgeous and you are such a nice person , it was not a complaint at all , the leaf will be a mom soon , the leaf is thick and healthy , if you had gotten some of the plants I have you would realize how nice your's are , I am more than pleased with your plants and the broken leaf is a bonus in my mind , please please don't feel this was a complaint , it in no way was :)
thank you so much Gail , you are a dear and I am happy that I bought from you and would like to continue to here or on ebay and if in future you are looking for something please ask if I might have it I would be happy to offer it to you :)

All the best thoughts of you ,
Connie Lynn

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Oh......I wasn't taking it a complaint at all.........just makes me mad when a leaf breaks!!! But, I am like you when I receive a plant...........anything broken gets planted anyway! (LOL)

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Gail,
I have received plants with broken leaves many times. No matter how carefully things are packed this can happen. It's just an invitation to propagate LOL.
