Two summers ago, I bought 24 guinea eggs on-line. They were all white eggs. I hatched them, and a happy flock of guineas was born.
Last summer, I found a huge nest of guinea eggs. They were all white eggs. I hatched them and sold a bunch to friends and kept some more.
This spring, the guineas are actively in a laying mode. However, they are laying wherever they feel like it (last year it was in a bunch of high weeds by the road - all eggs in one nest).
I find an egg under the lilac bushes, one under the trailer, some in with my chicken in eggs in the nesting boxes. I'm finding them in the middle of the driveway, wherever my guineas just get the urge to lay.
This is what's weird - only some of the eggs are all white. I have a bunch of light brown, speckled guinea eggs, brown guinea eggs, etc.
Is it possible that my current crop of guineas may be chicken crosses? they look like and act like guineas. I have a bunch of different colored guineas, white, kinda champagne, regular old guineas, lavender.
I also have an entirely rude black runner duck who tries to breed with every fowl that lives here, except for the Peahen.
I know they are guinea eggs. I have no banties and all my chickens lay really big eggs. And guineas have those little eggs with the pointy top.
So. Do I save these eggs and incubate them and hatch them, or am I going to end up with some kind of Frankenstein-like Guinea?
Thanks!!!
Oh, I can't take pictures, right now, I'm in bed with the darn not-swine-flu. Just flu. Feels icky just the same!
Guinea egg colors
Our guinea eggs are different colors too. Sometimes more khaki brown, sometimes lighter. I think it's just individual variation, not the result of a guinea-chicken cross. Our guineas are definitely pure guineas.
I was sure hoping that was the answer! I have been a little worried because in the past, the eggs were always a pure white!
What a relief. I can start collecting them and then incubate them again!
I was pretty sure all my guineas were 100 percent guinea, they sure sound like it!
Last year, on lone little baby guinea made it's way to the yard - I guess one of the mama's manage to set an egg for the full 28 days, but he did not make it all by himself.
Thank you so much!
No problem. I have a question for you now. Have you noticed that your guinea's eggshells are really thick and sturdy? I've never seen such thick shells on chicken eggs. The guinea eggs are like little rocks. When cracking them I really have to give them a good whack in order to break the shell.
