Suggestions for containers for underplanting a rose standard

I have 2 white JFK rose standards in pots. This year I thought it would be nice to plant some white petunias and diamond frost euyonomus underneath. But the roses have been planted in the pots for a couple years, and I don't want to disturb the roots, so I thought it would be better to set pots on top of the rose's soil. Ideally, those containers that I've seen that come in 2 half donuts so you can put them around your umbrella on your patio table. But I think those would be too shallow. Right now I've got them in separate 4 - 6" plastic pots, which I'm hoping won't show once the petunias grow. Anyone have any better suggestions? Here's a photo:
