The mating phenomenon!!!

Virginia Beach, VA

I had been ponding for 8 years and most of you had seen my pond pictures with netting. I had never had koi babies that lived. last year DH moved some plants from big pond to the preformed and few days later hundreds of babies!!! He made a mistake of putting 2 big kois with them before we left for 10 days vaction and when we arrived baby kois were all gone. Perhaps the big kois feasted on them? Now this is the question. For few days i have lots of bubbles in my big pond, lots of activities like kois congregating where there are lots of parrots leathers and literally moving around wild in groups thus shredding the plants. I lifted one of the little pumps for my satatuory and saw several eggs so i put it back for fear that I might disturb them. Are they mating? Are they laying eggs? I have a powerful pump because I have a 4 foot waterfull and will the eggs be sucked in the filter? How about the bubbles? I appreciate your help. Bellieg

Hmmm....It seems just a tad early for your koi to be mating (although not impossible) Usually it's based on water temps and length of day (sunlight) so being in VA in early May, seems like it "may" be a bit too early for them. Could it be frog or snail eggs? Goldfish seem to spawn ALWAYS, but koi are a bit more limited.
Usually, Koi will spawn early in the morning, like 6am, you'll see them swarming and shoving the females around. Eggs will be everywhere, but quickly eaten if either the fish, or eggs, are not removed. There also can be an odd odor around the pond, and sometimes a milky appearance to the water.
It IS possible that they are spawning, but they certainly don't do one egg at a time. If they really are koi eggs, you'll have to watch closely and remove the few remaining eggs or fry, or you'll for sure lose them.

I thnak you for your answer . They are a lot calmer now. I have to check what haoppened to the eggs .Is it safe to handle the eggs? When I wrote the thread they were behaving weird. Happy ponding . bellie

The eggs will only be eggs for a few days, it doesn't take long for them to hatch. You will see them get cloudy if they are sterile (and fuzzy) If they are clear an have 2 eye dots in them, they are good. You can move them to water that is the same temp and condition. Once the fry hatch, they will live off their yolk sac for a day or 2, but then you will have to feed them koi fry food. If youre in a natural enviroment, they will be good with the plant life and particulate matter in the water, but feed them after you see little guys swimming around. In a month, they'll be about 1/4 to 1/2 inch at best, with no real color identity yet.
