Got what is supposedly a patchouli plant for a friend that loves the stuff. I am totally unfamiliar with the plant but this one is different from the one she has. The leaves look the same but the one I got has fuzzy leaves and no discernible scent. Anyone have a clue.
patchouli
Can you post a photo? I believe there are 2 species that are used for patchouly.
Unfortunately, no photo. Do you by any chance know the botanical names so I can look for the on the computer? Thanks!
there are a few patchouli varieties..the 2 most common sold, that i know of, are pogostemon cablin and pogostemon heyneanus (not sure of spelling :-) ..many years ago i was told by an herbalist that cablin is the best to use for anything because it has a stronger aroma and a lot of other good stuff that i unfortunately can't remember now... i really don't know how to tell the difference, and have heard many people try to pass the heyneanus off as cablin...when i buy a plant i just keep rubbing leaves on different ones until i find one that passes my 'smell test' :-) ...also i have never seen or heard of one with fuzzy leaves... of course i could be wrong on that...hope this helps a little...
I had patchouli in Florida (Z9), and it got immense and had white flowers. I actually had to tear it out the second year and try to maintain just a small amont. It made many seedlings. I don't think you'd have too much to worry about in your zone. I don't know what type it was (didn't know there was more than one at the time), but it did have slightly fuzzy leaves, like spearmint does, and it had that same square stem. The smell when the leaves were crushed was so exotic and spicy. I haven't thought about it lately, but I would be happy to try again.
I did grow an herb sold as a patchouli plant at one time. I think it did have a patchouli scent but it was not hardy in zone 5 or 6 and died out over the winter. I have not seen it sold in local nurseries recently.
